Background:
Joseph Wilkinson, born on 26th July, 1937, came from Rooskey, Co. Roscommon. Formerly a student he joined An Garda Siochana on 13th November, 1958. On completion of training he was allocated to Store Street Garda Station, Dublin on 13th April, 1959, and also served at Pearse Street (Traffic), Dublin before moving to Garda HQ (Transport Details) on 11th October, 1968. Garda Wilkinson was also a member of the Garda Choir. Garda Wilkinson was married with six children.

Circumstances:

At 7.00 pm on Wednesday, 14th February, 1990, Garda Wilkinson was driving an official unmarked Garda car towards Cashel, Co. Tipperary, accompanied by two other colleagues from Bishopstown Garda Station, Cork. They were conveying a detained person to Cork.  At Ashill, Horse & Jockey, the Garda vehicle was involved in a collision. Garda Wilkinson was killed instantly.
