Operation Thor and the Lock Up Light Up campaign has sought to influence home and business owners behaviour when it comes to securing their premises. Burglaries have fallen 30% from 2015 and are at their lowest levels since 2012. Winter burglaries are down 19% compared to the previous winter.
Most burglars will enter your home via the front or rear door. To deter the burglar ensure the structure and fitting of the door is of a good standard. The door’s security is dependent on the quality of the lock in the door. If you are considering upgrading your doors An Garda Síochána recommend PAS 24-2016 standard.

Gardaí at Naas Garda Station are investigating unauthorised taking of a vehicle from a garage on Sallins Road, Naas on Thursday 3rd November 2016.
At about 3pm a man entered the garage looking to arrange a test drive in a Toyota Auris, bronze in colour registration number 151KE3440. He took the car for a test drive with a salesman and when they returned the salesman got out of the car and as he did the man drove out of the garage in the car.
The car was subsequently recovered the following day at Rathborne Avenure, Cabra, Dublin 15.
The culprit is described as five foot ten to five foot eleven inches in height of thin build with dark stubble and glasses. He is quiet spoken with a Dublin accent and was wearing dark navy work type trousers over jeans and a green hoody. He has a small Indian ink dot on his middle finger on his left hand and scabs like dermatitis.

The Gardaí at Castlecomer are investigating a burglary that occurred on Thursday 8th December 2016 at 7.35pm.
An elderly brother and sister answered a knock on their door, it was about 7.35pm. A male entered the house and took a bag belonging to the woman. The victim activated her personal alarm and the man left.
The suspect was described as stocky, possibly 50 years with his mouth covered. No other description available.

The Gardaí at Dun Laoighaire Garda Station are investigating the murder of Charlie Self who was fatally stabbed in his home at Brighton Avenue in 1982.
On the 21st January at 8.50am Charlie Self’s body was found in his home by his house mate on Brighton Avenue, Monkstown, Co Dublin. He had been stabbed multiple times. He was 32 years old. (DOB: 14.02.1949).
On the night of Wednesday, the 20th January 1982 Charlie was socialising in Dublin City Centre. He was seen in The Bailey Bar at approx 8.30pm leaving at approx 9pm. He was then seen in the South William Public House where he remained until approx 10.30pm.
He then went to Bartley Dunne’s pub on Stephens Street Lower (since knocked down and replaced by Break for the Border) where he remained with five friends until approx 11.30pm.
He left the pub at approx 11.30pm and went alone to the Hot Pot Cafe on Burgh Quay. He ordered food to take away, he chatted to people in the queue and left the cafe at approx 12.05am. Shortly after 12.05am he was seen by witnesses outside public toilets on Burgh Quay where he was seen talking to two men.
The next sighting of Charlie was at approx 12.20am when he got a taxi from the Taxi Rank at Eden Quay with another unidentified male. The taxi arrived at Charlie’s home in Brighton Avenue at approx 12.40am where both passengers left the taxi.
During that night Charlie’s housemate was awoken at 2am by a conversation in the house. He woke again when a man opened his door and looked into his bedroom at an unknown time.
Charlie’s neighbour also claims to have been woken up by the sound of things being moved around in Charlie’s garden. When she heard this noise she looked out her window and saw a man climbing over Charlie’s wall and heard a female voice saying the words “Would you mind?”
At 8.50am the next morning 21st of January Charlie’s body was found in his house at the bottom of the stairs by the door leading to the courtyard.
Appeal:
• Gardaí are looking for anyone who may have seen Charlie that night, in particular anyone that was in the Hot Pot Cafe on Burgh Quay.
• The two men that were seen talking to Charlie outside the public toilets on Burgh Quay and the man who joined him in the taxi were never identified. Garda wish to speak to these men.
• It has been 35 years since the murder of Charlie Self; Gardaí realise that it was a “different Ireland” at the time, in that homosexuality was illegal and that some people may have been afraid to come forward. They want to reassure anyone thinking about coming forward now, that they will be treated with sensitivity.

The Gardaí at Ballyfermot Garda Station are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of thirty six year old Mark Burke (28/09/1977) who’s partial remains were found at Thornton’s Recycling Plant, Killeen Road on the 31st July 2014 (The August Bank Holiday weekend).
Following a Garda appeal made on Crimecall on the 22nd September 2014, Mark was reported missing to Gardaí by his father Noel on the 11th November 2014. Mark was subsequently identified through DNA profiling.
Mark had been living at Bentley House, Dun Laoghaire up to a short while before his death. Gardaí have established that the last confirmed sighting of Mark was at Dun Laoghaire District Court House on Monday 28th July 2014 at 2.30pm when he was released from custody. Mark had been in court in relation to an outstanding warrant for a minor public order offence. As far as Gardaí have been able to establish, Mark was homeless at the time of his death.
In excess of 600 lines of investigation have been carried out to establish how, where, when and why Mark died. The investigation is ongoing.
There is a period of up to 80 hours for which Mark’s movements are unknown. Due to the time it took to establish Mark’s identity, and as a result of the identification, establishing where the focus of the investigation should be, CCTV that could have provided evidence of Mark’s movements during that period had been overwritten. Mark was known to frequent Dundrum and Dun Laoghaire areas.
The appeal now is focused on the Dun Laoghaire area as this was Mark’s last confirmed sighting, and the area where he was best known. Mark Burke was 36 years of age at the time of his death. He was a local man who was born in and lived his life in the Sandyford and Dunlaoghaire – Rathdown areas.
Gardaí are appealing to all persons who knew Mark, who may have been in Mark’s company, saw or spoke to Mark, between 2.30pm on the 28th July and 31st July 2014 to make contact with the Gardaí. Gardaí are also appealing to all persons who have any information, no matter what it is, in relation to the last movements of Mark, particularly whose company he may have been in during this period, and anything that may assist the investigation in determining how Mark came to his death.

Gardaí at Tallaght wish to renew their appeal for assistance from the public on the 10th anniversary of the murder of Michael Gallagher that occurred at his home, 49 Tymonville Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24 on 18th January 2007 shortly after 10pm.
On the night of Thursday 18th January 2007, Michael and his partner were at home in 49 Tymonville Road, Tallaght. At approximately 10.06pm a knock came to the door and was answered by Michael Gallagher’s partner. Two males entered the house and went to the kitchen area where an unprovoked attack took place on Michael Gallagher. During the assault Michael sustained a fatal knife wound to the body. The assailants left the house and fled the scene on foot. Michael’s partner was also injured in this attack.
Detective Inspector John Walsh stated, "We are issuing an appeal to those people who, in the passage of time, may not have come forward at the time of the murder but may now feel comfortable to do so.” Gardaí continue to liaise with the family of Michael Gallagher in connection with this extensive murder investigation and are seeking witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have seen two men on the roadway near the home place of Michael Gallagher around 10pm on the evening or any unusual activity observed in the Tymonville area on the evening of 18th January 2007 to come forward.

The Gardaí at Ronanstown Garda Station are investigating the murder of sixty two year old Noel Kirwan that occurred at St. Ronan’s Drive, on December 22nd 2016 shortly after 5 pm.
Earlier that evening the victim and some family members went to a restaurant in the Sundrive road area of Dublin. After leaving the restaurant the victim dropped his partner’s daughter home before continuing on his journey, together with his partner that brought him to St. Ronan’s Drive.
Mr Kirwan had just driven his car into the driveway of a house and was still sitting in the driver’s seat. At this point a gunman walked into the driveway of the house and fired a number of shots, fatally wounding Noel.
The gunman was dressed in black hoody, with a scarf covering his face. He left the scene and went to a waiting white Peugeot Partner van registration number 10CE9834. The van left the scene via St. Ronans Avenue, Neilstown Road, before being abandoned and set alight at the rear of Neilstown Shopping centre.
Appeal:
• Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of St. Ronan’s Drive or St. Ronan’s Avenue in the hours prior to the murder of Noel Kirwan to come forward.
• Gardaí are appealing to information as to the whereabouts of the white Peugeot Van Registration number 10CE9834 prior to the murder to come forward.
• Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the Neilstown Shopping Centre area who may have seen the suspects exit the white Peugeot Van and make their escape to come forward.

On this month’s traffic segment, Garda Derek Cloughley was in studio to discuss driver behaviour on our roads in 2016 and a review of fatalities in 2016, there were 187 fatalities, 25 more than 2015.
Garda Cloughley also reviewed the Christmas and New Year anti drink driving campaign. There was a 35% increase in arrests on suspicion of intoxicated driving and a 70% increase in the number of checkpoints performed.
Garda Cloughley offered a brief overview of the 2017 roads policing plan, with particular reference to the four offences that will be targeted - driving under the influence, speeding, non use of safety belts and mobiles phones.
And finally Garda Cloughley highlighted the need for visibility with specific reference to pedestrians.
