Bikesafe

Bikesafe-logoBikeSafe is an initiative being run by An Garda Síochána offering a BikeSafe workshop and an on the road assessment ride accompanied by an Advanced Garda Motorcyclist. The workshops are open to all motorcyclists holding a full motorcycle driving licence. BikeSafe will be beneficial to experienced bikers, to those returning to motorcycling after a few years absence and are especially useful for those who have only recently passed their test. The workshop of 3 hours duration is aimed at helping you become a safer, more competent and confident rider. Each workshop will be held on a Saturday. There will be 3 workshops with 3 participants. These workshops will start at 8am, 10am and 2pm. Any person wishing to take part in a BikeSafe workshop must be fully insured and sign an indemnity to this effect. Overall BikeSafe aims to raise awareness of the importance and value of progressing on to accredited post-test training.

Whilst Advanced Garda Motorcyclists are some of the safest on the roads, we are not in the business of delivering rider training to the public, hence BikeSafe is not a training scheme. Through our BikeSafe workshops, a detailed briefing will be provided on hazard awareness and how to make your motorcycling safer approximately 1½ hours long, followed up by an on-road assessed ride of a 1½  hours duration. Using data from recent years the workshop is designed to help you identify and avoid some of the most common causes of collisions. The Workshop presentation will cover the key elements of Motorcycle Roadcraft, focusing on positioning, cornering and overtaking.

The ride-out will be with an experienced Advanced Garda Motorcyclist, who will have completed the Standard and Advanced courses within An Garda Síochána. The ride-out itself will be approximately 50km in length. This will provide you with an opportunity to get detailed feedback on the strengths and areas for development of your riding. We will provide honest feedback in our review, as we believe that provides the greatest benefit to the participant.

BikeSafe will be run as a pilot scheme from Roads Policing Division, Dublin Castle this Summer. It will be run from June to September 2021. There will be limited places available to 100 participants over this time. BikeSafe is an initiative being run by An Garda Síochána aimed at promoting road safety and is free of charge. Going forward it is anticipated following a successful pilot by Roads Policing Division, Dublin Castle, that this initiative will be rolled out nationwide in 2022.

An area for development may be highlighted on the ride-out that could significantly improve your safety as a motorcyclist. By taking part in BikeSafe you can increase your ability and confidence as a motorcyclist.
