The Gardaí at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station are investigating an Aggravated Burglary that occurred on Saturday the 14th May 2016, at Mounttown, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.

At approximately 2.25am two males gained entry to a house using the rear door of the property. The victim was asleep on the sofa in the living room, the rest of the family were asleep upstairs. One of the men was armed with a lump hammer. Gardaí believe they were looking for the keys to the family’s cars, which were parked in the driveway. One of the men found the keys to one of the cars, a Volkswagen Golf, but they continued to search for the keys to the second vehicle.

The victim was woken by the men, who stood over him and threatened him, demanding the keys to the second car. He was struck a number of times with the lump hammer as the men demanded to know where the keys were.

The victim’s son, who had been asleep upstairs, heard the commotion and came downstairs. He saw the two men in the living room with his father. One of the men saw him and chased him out of the house. At this point one of the men got into the Volkswagan Golf car and drove it out of the driveway and along the road. The car was faulty and broke down. The men made their getaway in a small red car that was parked at the entrance to the estate and driven by a third man.

Appeal:

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the vicinity of the Mounttown Road area between 12am and 3am on Saturday the 14th May 2016 and who may have information to come forward.
• The two men were described as being in their twenties, between six foot two and six foot three inches in height of slim build and spoke with Dublin accents.

The Gardaí at Baltinglass Garda Station are investigating an Aggravated Burglary that occurred on Wednesday, 16th March 2016 at Shillelagh, Co. Wicklow.

The injured party, a man in his eighties was staying with a friend at Shillelagh, Co. Wicklow on that Wednesday, the day before St. Patrick’s Day. They had lunch at home that day and went to mass that evening. Shortly after 7pm they arrived home and later, the woman went out to visit her friend. The man settled down for the evening, reading a book and watching television in the sitting room.

Just as the man was watching the nine news, three men burst into the sitting room. Two of the men were armed with what looked like a wooded baton and an iron bar. They were all wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered. They demanded money from the injured party and he handed them his wallet. They demanded more money and to know where the safe was. They ransacked several rooms in the house and stole a coin box containing money in old denominations and an antique gun.

One of the raiders tied the man’s feet together with a scarf. The raiders fled on foot from the house. Witnesses recall seeing lights from a car nearby parked on the Ballynultagh road.

During the burglary the man was assaulted and struck a number of times and received facial injuries. He was treated in hospital for his injuries.

Appeal:

• The wallet contained eight €100 notes and the coin box contained old coins & currency including punts. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who has come across this money or may know anyone who has to come forward.

• The antique gun that was stolen was a decommissioned “Ruger” pistol, Gardaí are appealing anyone who may know the whereabouts of this gun to come forward.

• At 8.20pm that evening at nearby Tinahely, car registration number plates 04WH4366 were reported stolen from an Audi A4. Gardaí believe the raiders may have used a similar car with these number plates.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the area between 8pm and 10pm, people are asked to recall any suspicious activity in Shillelagh that night.

The Gardaí at Castledermot Garda Station are investigating an Aggravated Burglary that occurred on Thursday 10th November 2016 at Tankardstown, Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow.

The injured party, a ninety year old man was at home watching the television, it was approximately 8pm. There was a knock on the front door and when the man opened it, three men burst in demanding money, they were dressed in dark clothing and one of them had an iron bar. One of the men grabbed the injured party and pushed him into the kitchen. One of the men cut the landline phone wire, two of the men went to the bedroom where they took a quantity of cash. They returned to the kitchen were the injured party was being held, a small struggle ensued between the victim and one of the raiders. All three then fled the scene.

Less than two weeks prior to this incident, on Friday 28th October between 1.30pm and 2pm, a man in a silver Kildare registered Toyota Avensis estate car called to the man on the pretence of delivering a socket set for his son. This man told the injured party that his son ordered them and he was now due payment for same, the victim was deceived into handing over €100.

This man is described as forty years of age, five foot six to five foot eight in height of medium build with strawberry red hair, he was well dressed in a brown jacket and trousers.

Appeal:

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to man who called to the injured party on the 28th October to come forward, Gardaí are trying to establish if this man called to any other resident in the area of Tankardstown on this date or at any other time. Gardaí are also looking for information in relation to the car in which this man was driving, a silver Toyota Avensis, possibly Kildare registration.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have seen something suspicious between the 28th October and 10th November to come forward.

Gardaí are appealing for information in relation to an aggravated burglary that occurred at a local shop in Carpenterstown, Dublin 15 on Monday 4th April 2016.

It was approximately 6.45am, the manager was busy opening up, taking in deliveries from outside the front of the shop. He was approached by two masked and armed men. They pushed him back into the shop and on to the floor, one of the men was armed with a hammer and threatened the manager. The second man closed the shutter on the front window. At this time a witness drove into the car park and saw a commotion going on in the shop. One of the raiders appeared to have an earpiece and spoke to a third person.

The raiders continued to threaten the manager, demanding money and access to the safe. They dragged him to the office. One of the men was armed with a crowbar and attempted to gain entry to the safe, he also had a large crowbar that he used to open the safe.

The raiders could not gain access to the safe and they left the shop, they ran through the carpark and over a fence into the Warren Estate.

Appeal:

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Carpenterstown area early that morning, especially delivery drivers and may have seen something suspicious to come forward.

• Gardaí believe the raiders made their getaway in a vehicle that was possibly waiting in the Warren estate and would have turned left out of the estate towards Carpenterstown Road and Coolmine.

• The raiders were dressed in dark clothing and were armed with two crowbars and a hammer. They spoke with Dublin accents.

Gardaí at Terenure Garda Station are investigating an aggravated burglary that occurred on Monday 5th October 2015 at Osprey Avenue, Templeogue, Dublin 6.

Sometime after 11.15am, an au pair working and living with a family in Osprey Avenue was at home alone. The family had left the house earlier that morning at about 8.40am for work and school. There was a knock on the front door and when the au pair opened it there was a man standing there, he was wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses. The au pair did not speak very much English and the man asked to see the father of the house, believing it was business or work related the au pair allowed the man to come into the house.

The au pair became nervous and asked the man what was he looking for and he asked her for a cup of tea. He then grabbed her and started to attack her. He threw her to the ground and covered her mouth and tried to strangle her with a tie.  He placed a stocking into her mouth. She fought him back, scratched his face and bit his index finger on his right hand, until eventually he gave up and fled from the house. The au pair worked with the Garda Photographic Unit to create an EvoFIT, computer generated image of her attacker. 

Appeal:

• Gardaí have released an EVOFIT of the man that entered the house. He is described as six foot tall and aged in his fifties with a very thin face with a pale skin and a large nose. He was wearing a blue baseball cap and sunglasses.

• The man may have had scratch marks on his face or neck, do you recall seeing a man similar to the EVOFIT with these marks?

• The man ran from the house and over a small wood bridge in Tymon Park in the direction of Limekiln Road.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have information in relation to this incident to come forward or anyone who seen anything suspicious on the morning of Monday 5th October 2015.

The Gardaí at Swords Garda Station are investigating an aggravated burglary that occurred on in the early hours of Wednesday 28th September 2016.

The victim was at home when he answered a knock at the front door and was confronted by four men who threatened him. They tied him up using cable ties and searched the house. They stole a substantial sum of money.

The victim compiled a detailed EVOFIT of one of the raiders who is described as having short black hair, clean shaven, soft Dublin accent, approx six foot tall and medium build. He was wearing dark clothes, long sleeves and possibly jeans. He looked to be in his 30’s.
 
Second male is described as being short and skinny, wearing a cream jumper and jeans, described him as having blonde hair, brushed over to the side, and being in his late 20s.

Third male is described as being five foot ten inches to six foot tall, short dark hair, skinny and wearing jeans.

The Gardaí at Watercourse Road Garda Station are investigating a number of incidents that occurred in the Mayfield area of Cork City on Friday 10th July 2015.

At approximately 10.30pm, at St.Martin’s, Iona Park, Old Youghal Road, an attempted burglary occurred, the suspect was disturbed by a resident who saw a man at a door at the rear of the house. The suspect was armed with a hammer, which was reported missing from a shed at the back of this house a short time later.

At about 10.50pm a call was received at a local taxi company and a taxi was booked to collect a fare at Boyne Crescent, a short distance away. A taxi driver was dispatched and collected a man at Boyne Crescent. The man got into the rear passenger door but moved across the seats and sat directly behind the driver. He told the driver to take him to the graveyard at Kilcully. When they arrived at the cemetery, the passenger put a leather strap around the driver’s neck and attempted to choke him. He threatened him and demanded money. The driver struggled and the strap broke releasing the grip. The suspect fled from the car and ran in the direction of the graveyard.

Just across the road from the graveyard is Kilcully campsite, where local girl guides had set up tents for the night, at 11.15pm, as one of the leaders was sitting in her car talking on her mobile phone she noticed a man dressed in dark clothing attempting to get into a car parked beside her. She opened her door and confronted him and he fled. A rucksack and a mobile phone were later discovered missing from one of the tents.

A very short distance away, at Old Mallow Road, a man was at home alone settling down for the evening, he had just let his dog out to the back garden. He was in the sitting room watching television. He decided to make a cup of tea and went into the kitchen where he was confronted by a man who attacked him with a hammer. They struggled for a number of minutes in the kitchen. The suspect sprayed the injured party in the face with a substance and struck him on the head with the hammer. The suspect stole the man’s wallet and fled from the house. The suspect was captured on CCTV on this road and appeared to have something in his hand. The wallet was found on this road a short time later.

 
Appeal:

• An EVOFIT was created by the injured party where the aggravated burglary occurred at Kilcully. Can you identify this man?

• Gardaí are appealing for the taxi driver who collected a man on Old Mallow Road after the aggravated burglary occurred to come forward.

• The suspect who attacked the taxi driver at Kilcully graveyard was wearing a McKenzie bag. This bag was recovered at the campsite where the rucksack was stolen. This rucksack was recovered in the garden of the house at Old Mallow Road.

• The suspect is described at between 25 – 35 years old, stocky build, wearing dark clothing and spoke with a north side cork accent.

The Gardaí at Baileboro Garda Station are investigating an aggravated burglary that occurred in Cornaman, Kingscourt, Co. Cavan on Thursday 11th February 2016.

At approximately 6.30pm a woman was at home alone, her husband was due home and she was in the kitchen preparing dinner. Just ten minutes later at 6.40pm the woman saw the lights from her husband’s car reversing around the back of the house. The woman heard a loud bang from the back garden and went to investigate. A man had smashed the glass panel in the back door and was attempting to get in. Her husband was being assaulted by 3 men. The woman attempted to prevent them from entering the house but was overcome by the raiders. She ran to the kitchen to get her phone to call the Gardaí but one of the raiders grabbed her and assaulted her. The raiders tied the couple up using cable ties. The raiders took the husband into another room and demanded to know where the safe was.

The woman remained in the kitchen and continued to be assaulted by the raiders. The raiders found a safe in the house but it was empty. They demanded the keys to the woman’s SUV that was parked at the front of the house. The raiders made their getaway in this vehicle and travelled in the direction of Kingscourt.

The couple received a number of injuries as a result of this aggravated burglary. The raiders were in the couple’s home for over an hour.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the Cornaman area of Kinsgcourt on Thursday 11th February between 6pm and 9pm to come forward.
• The vehicle stolen was a Black Landrover Freelander registration number 07CN3857. It is still outstanding & Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information on the whereabouts of this SUV to come forward.
• Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to this aggravated burglary to come forward.

Gardaí at Mountjoy Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to an aggravated burglary that occured on Mannix Road, Drumcondra, Dublin 9 in the early hours of St.Stephen’s Day, the 26th December 2015.

Three family members were confronted by a man armed with a gun as they were outside the front of the house. The man directed them back into the house where there was another family member present and a struggled ensued between them. The suspect fled on foot. He is described as being in his late twenty’s, of small build, five foot seven inches in height with dark coloured hair and held the gun in his right hand.

An EVOFIT was created of the alleged suspect.

Gardaí at Laytown Garda Station are investigating a robbery that occurred at a Centra Shop and Service Station on Monday 7th December 2015 in Mornington, Co. Meath.

At approximately 9.30pm the shop was closed, two members of staff turned off the petrol pumps and set the alarm and secured the building. As they were leaving through the back door, they were confronted by two men. One of the men was armed with a gun, they were both dressed in dark clothing with their faces partially covered. The men forced the two employees back into the corridor of the shop and brought them to an office where they sat them on chairs and tied their hands to the armrests using clear colored cable ties. The raiders demanded money and the key to the safe. They searched the premises and found a set of keys. They stole a quantity of money and placed it in a bag one of the raiders had on his back. They left the premises via the back door and yard.

The raiders ran through waste ground at the rear of the yard and over a fence into a housing estate known as Seaview.

Appeal:

• The raiders spoke to each other in a foreign language and spoke broken English to staff. They gained entry through the back yard of the premises, did you see any suspicious activity on this Monday night or the days prior to this Robbery.

• Did you notice any suspicious activity or vehicles in the Seaview area of Mornington on Monday 7th December 2015.

• A similar robbery occurred at a service station and shop in Bellurgan, Dundalk on Thursday 17th December, both raiders were dressed very similar to the raiders in Mornington and Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Gardaí at Clondalkin Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to an assault on a woman that occurred on the morning of Thursday 21st July 2016.

At approximately 10.45am a woman entered Corkagh Park for a morning run. She had ran this park before and she knew her lap well. One lap of the park is roughly three kilometres and would take approximately twenty minutes. It was one of the warmest days of the summers. As the woman ran past the baseball field towards the Cherrywood estate she noticed a man walking towards her. The man was wearing a winter style jacket with the hood up, he appeared to be looking down at his mobile phone as he walked past her. The woman thought he looked odd but continued on her run past the lakes towards St. John’s car park and around the park again for a second lap. As the woman ran by the baseball fields for a second time she noticed the same man she had seen earlier running across the fields. His jacket was now open with the hood down.

As the woman made her way by the Cherrywood Estate towards the lakes she was grabbed from behind and pushed towards the shrubbery close to the path. The woman screamed and the man put his hand over her mouth and attempted to drag her into the bushes. The woman continued to scream and struggle and using her right elbow managed to push him off. The attacker then fled running across a bridge towards the baseball fields. A man who had was in the park came to the woman’s aid and the called the Gardaí.

Appeal:

• This assault occurred shortly after 11am on Thursday 21st July, it was an extremely warm and sunny day and Corkagh Park was very busy with families, walkers and cyclists that morning. Where you in the park that morning and did you see something, please come forward.

• The attacker was wearing a dark winter style jacket with dark bottoms and a black t-shirt with a gold emblem, he was approximately five foot in height of very slim build with a tanned face. He was described as being in his late twenties or early thirties.  Please study the detailed EVOFIT compiled by the injured party and together with the description provided, can you help identify him?

• Gardaí are anxious to know where the assailant went after the assault and a mode of transport used, did you see a man matching this description in one of the car parks of the park.

Gardaí at Ballymun Garda Statin are investigation a cash in transit robbery that occurred on Tuesday 26th April 2016 at a service station on the Ballymun Road, Dublin 9.

The cash in transit van parked in the four court of the service station for a short time before the collection was due. Shortly before at 8.30am a Silver Alfa Romeo Giulietta car registration number 12D19442 was observed driving slowly on Northwood Avenue, located close to the service station. Just before 9am the security guard began to make the collection from the service station to the van.

As the guard exited the service station making his way to the van parked on the forecourt the silver Alfa Romeo Giuletta approached the station and reversed from the Ballymun road across the forecourt towards the security guard. A man got out of the front passenger side of the Alpha car and approached the security guard, he was armed with a large knife and threatened the security guard. He stole the cash box and fled from the scene in the car.

The car then turned right onto Ballymun road and drove on the wrong side of the road before turning left at the junction of Northwood Avenue. The car was now on the correct side of the road and travelled towards the junction at St.Margaret’s Road, where it turned left.

The car continued along St.Margaret’s road until it reached the Mayeston Square Apartments and parked in an underground car park. The raiders broke open the cash box activating the alarm and the dye. They left the car park and entered the building.

Appeal:

• The Alfa Romeo Giulietta car registration number 12D19442 used in the robbery was stolen during a burglary from a house in Bayside, Sutton, Co. Dublin between 10pm on Tuesday 19th April and 6.30 am on Wednesday 20th April this year, approximately a week before the robbery. The car had a distinctive sticker across the top of the front and back windscreen. The sticker read “Diana loves Brian”. (The word “Loves” was replaced by a heart symbol). We are appealing to anyone that may have seen this car between these dates in the North County Dublin and wider Leinster area to come forward.

• There were a number of items of personal property in the car when it was stolen including a large amount of Canon Camera equipment including camera’s and lenses and electrical equipment including an Asus Laptop, Nexus Tablet and an Apple Ipod.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Santry and Ballymun area on that Tuesday morning or anyone who was in the service station at the time of the robbery to come forward.

• The raiders made their getaway in the Alpha Romeo Car and drove into an underground car park at the Mayeston Square Apartment complex. The raiders would have had to enter a code to exit this complex and Gardaí are appealing to anyone residing in the complex with information about this robbery to come forward.

• At some stage here the box was cut open with an angle grinder and the money was removed. The alarm on the box was activated and as a result the money was covered with dye. 

• The raiders used a code to enter the main building from the underground car park. They went up to the ground level of the building and exited through the normal door where a waiting car took them from the area.  This car had a Taxi symbol on the side but had no taxi plate. The car may have been a Toyota Avensis. 

• The first raider is described as five foot five to five foot seven inches in height of stocky build with a Dublin accent and about thirty years of age. He wore a black tracksuit top with a zip, blue tracksuit bottoms, runners and a red scarf that partially covered his face. He was armed with an eight inch kitchen knife.

• The second raider was described at five foot five to five foot six inches in height with a skinny face & a dark complexion and twenty to twenty five years of age. He wore a black woolly hat with a dark hood pulled up over his hat.

• Gardaí believe that dyed money may be in circulation in the North Dublin area and are urging anyone that has come across it to come forward.
 
Gardaí at Ballymun Garda Station are investigating Telephone 01 6664400

The Gardaí at Finglas Garda Station are investigating a Cash In Transit Robbery that occurred on Sunday the 26th June 2016, at the Village Inn Public House, Finglas, Dublin 11.

At approximately 2.40pm a security cash in transit van was making a collection at the pub. The security guard entered the premises to make the collection. A white Volkswagen Caddy van registration number 06TS4219, reversed into the car park, directly behind the security van. There were three men in the van.

As the guard returned to the security van with the cash collection, a man exited the Caddy van via the rear door. This man ran towards the guard pointing a gun at him, threatening him demanding that he dropped the cashbox. The man then grabbed the box and ran back to the Caddy. He got into the rear of the van as it drove way turning left onto Cappagh Road and then onto Patrickswell Road. The Caddy was recovered abandoned a short while later at Scribblestown Grove, Finglas, it was completely intact.

Appeal:

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the vicinity of the village Inn Between 2pm and 2.45pm on Sunday the 26th of June. Ireland were playing France in the FIFA European Tournament.
• Gardaí are appealing to anyone in Scribblestown Grove, Finglas, as the men abandoned the Caddy.
• Anyone with knowledge as to who had possession of the van from the time it was purchased, the 22nd April 2016 until it turned up at the scene at the Village Inn on the 26th.
• The raider is described as wearing a grey tracksuit with the hood up. He wore a black scarf covering his face and yellow gloves. He is described as average height/build and spoke with a Dublin accent.

On this month’s Crime Prevention Segment, Sergeant Kelvin Courtney was in studio and discussed how to safeguard against phone theft. The advice will strongly recommend that smart phone owners record details of their IMEI number. Only one in three people have this unique 15 digit number, when reporting their mobile phone stolen.

The National Crime Prevention Unit at the Garda Community Relations Bureau have developed an information graphic which demonstrates how to record the IMEI number.

The process is as follows:

1. Simply dial *#06#

2. A 15 digit number will appear on your screen

3. Take a screen shot of this number (this usually involves holding the power button and home button simultaneously, handsets may vary).

4. Email this picture to yourself, giving you a permanent record of this number.

If a smart phone has been found or recovered and the IMEI number has been recorded on pulse, An Garda Síochána can return the phone to the rightful owner.

If the victim has their phone registered with a network provider, the IMEI number can be used to identify the handset and block any further use.

Although Burglaries have decreased significantly, burglary levels remain high during the summer months. Burglary can occur at any time during the day/night.

Unsecured entry points are more likely to be targeted during the summer than during the winter months, lock doors and windows when leaving the house and lock doors even when at home. This goes for both the front and rear of the property. Burglary through an unsecured entry point may also have implications for insurance coverage.

Burglars are more likely to steal property during the summer months, possibly because they have more time once entering the property – ensure the alarm is working and switched on when the house is vacant and at night when the home is occupied.

Keep in mind that having a restricted view of the property from the outside (hedging, walls etc) can act as a promoter and not a deterrent to a burglar – the Burglar is less likely to be seen.

When going on holidays make the home looks occupied – ask neighbours to clear the mail from post-boxes, cut the front lawn and park a car in the driveway of possible, open and close curtains when necessary. Use timer switches for lights.

Store away ladders/ tools etc. Put a good lock on sheds and chain valuable equipment. Residents should consider putting in tamper proof locks on rear doors and windows

Burglars target CRAVED items – keep the most expensive jewellery hidden from view, never keep large amounts of cash in the home and do not leave CRAVED electronic items (laptops, smart phones) in obvious places when the residence is unoccupied or overnight.

If recovered, Gardaí can have difficulty tracing the owner of the property – make a record of valuable items and include photographs, serial numbers etc, mark the property with your Eircode.

Keep car keys away from the front door. There were at least 250 incidents where car keys were fished in 2015 across the full year.

On this month’s Crime Prevention segment, Sergeant Alan Roughneen was in studio to discuss this year’s “Supporting Safer Communities Campaign” which takes place from Thursday 2nd June to Wednesday 8th June 2016.

The campaign will commence on 2nd June to coincide with the “Bloom in the Park” festival. The Commissioner has designated the campaign will focus on personal safety and preventing crime linked with the night time economy. Sergeant Roughneen will offer advice to the public in relation to keeping themselves safe when on a night out and advise the public to plan their journey.

On this month’s Crime Prevention Segment, Sergeant Alan Roughneen was in studio to advise all drivers, both private and commercial, to make sure they properly lock and secure their cars. The driver may be distracted when leaving their car and assume they have locked it without hearing the alarm cues. But unbeknownst to them their car key signal has been blocked and the car remains unlocked. The criminal can easily remove any valuable property without being noticed.

ADVICE

• Secure all doors, close all windows and put on your car alarm even if it is only for a short period of time. Double check your door is closed after you have engaged your alarm. Manually lock the car with the key if in any doubt.

• Take valuable property with you. Do not leave property on view inside your car, this includes when parked outside your home.

• Park in well lit and secure areas particularly overnight.

• Be wary of people loitering in parking areas who may be operating jammers. Be wary of people trying to distract you, someone else may be trying to physically block your vehicle door from locking. Notify any car park attendants, shop owners, etc.

• Report all thefts from cars or suspicious activity to the Gardaí.

On this month’s Crime Prevention Segment, Sergeant Kelvin Courtney was in studio to offer advice to the public in relation to purchasing a safe. Sergeant Courtney asked  the public to avoid keeping large sums of cash or valuables at home and to use financial institutions or safety deposit boxes to store their valuables.

If it is unavoidable, ensure cash and jewellery is stored in the appropriate safe. Consider what is going into the safe now and in the future and choose the most suitable security graded safe.

An Garda Síochána recommended at least a Grade 1 safe for domestic homes and at least a Grade 3 for Business premises.

The safe should be installed by professionals and serviced every five years.

Locate the safe in a place you are most likely to use. 

Ensure the safe is secured to a permanent fixture and consider connecting it to your alarm system.

Talk to your insurers about the right safe for your belongings.

On this month’s Crime Prevention segment Sergeant Kelvin Courtney was in studio to advise the public in relation to An Garda Síochána’s Anti Assault Campaign which seeks to reduce assaults through targeted action. The campaign is aimed towards young males between the ages of 18 to 39 years old.

According to the Garda Analysis Service, the vast majority of assaults are carried out by males aged between 18 and 39 against males of a similar age. These assaults typically take place in and around public places (street, roads, pubs and hotels) between 8pm and 5am at the weekend. Perpetrators of assaults tend not to repeat the crime and there is a very low level of repeat victimisation.

Mrs Rosie Dolan joined Keelin Shanley in studio to talk about the death of her twenty year old son Andrew, who tragically died after an unprovoked assault in 2011.

On this month’s Crime Prevention a feature highlighting new CCTV technology aimed at detecting and preventing crime was broadcast. The feature includes advice to the public and business owners on how to maintain their CCTV quality.

On this month’s Crime Prevention segment Sergeant Alan Roughneen was in studio to cover An Garda Síochána’s final ‘National Crime Prevention Day of Action’ for 2016 that will take place on Thursday 8th December 2016.  A ‘Retail Safety Day’, focusing on retail safety and security will coincide with the start of the busy festive shopping period.

The ‘Retail Safety Day’ will have a dual focus on retailers and shoppers. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness amongst retailers on ways to prevent business losses from criminal activity. The public will also be advised on safe shopping and parking, in order to avoid becoming a victim of crime, whilst improving their personal security.

Sergeant Alan Roughneen of the National Crime Prevention Unit reminds retailers that theft from shops increase from mid November until Christmas.

The four main items stolen from retailers are Groceries, Alcohol, Clothing and Cosmetics. It is noticeable that thefts from Clothes stores increase sharply just before Christmas and we also see a considerable increase of thefts from Pharmacies, largely involving cosmetic thefts, throughout November and December. 

Detective Superintendent Michael Gubbins of the Garda Cyber Crime Bureau joined Sergeant Roughneen in studio to advise the public in relation to internet usage in respect of Open Wifi access, particularly when making purchases online using open Wifi. This week two of the biggest shopping days for retailers occurs with Black Friday on 25th and Cyber Monday on the 28th. Detective Supt. Gubbins offered advice to the public on how to keep their account and personal details safe online.

On this month’s Crime Prevention segment Sergeant Kelvin Courtney was in studio to cover a number of topics including Firearm Safety, An Garda Síochana’s Lock up Light up Campaign and Halloween Safety.

An Garda Síochana’s message in relation to Firearm Safety is very clear, if you have a Firearm, please take the time to review your security procedures, always use your firearm in a safe manner, keep your firearm clean and well maintained and remember to act at all times within the firearms legislation. A small video transmission will be broadcast to illustrate these points.

As the winter sets in and the clocks go back next week An Garda Síochana urges all residents to be extra vigilant in respect of their home security. Sergeant Courtney was in studio to offer advice and reassurance to the public on the steps they can take to ensure their home and their property is safe. As part of Operation Thor An Garda Síochana are re-launching the Lock Up Light Up Campaign aimed at preventing burglaries.

Sergeant Courtney also offered Crime Prevention advice on how to remain safe on one of the busiest nights for emergency services, Halloween. He will illustrate this appeal with images of injuries received as a result of a bonfire or firework during the Halloween celebrations.

In October 1986, in a Dublin suburb, Philip Cairns, a thirteen-year-old boy went missing. It was lunch time and Philip had left his new school, Coláiste Éanna, at 12.50pm and walked the short distance to his home at Ballyroan road, Rathfarnham.

The walk home usually took him less than 15 minutes. Philip arrived home at one o’clock. His grandmother had his lunch waiting for him. After lunch he had a few minutes to spare before heading back to school - so he did his homework and swapped his books for his afternoon classes. At 1.30, he gathered up his schoolbag and left his house to return to school.

That was the last his Gran, his Mother and Father, his brother and sisters ever saw of Philip.

Philip left his home in Ballyroan Road in Rathfarnham to return to Coláiste Éanna. But he never made it back to the school. Despite extensive investigations, which are ongoing, no trace of Philip has yet been found. Six days after Philip’s disappearance, his schoolbag was found in a laneway near the school. This laneway links Ann Devlin Road and Ann Devlin Drive. Some of Philip’s books were missing from the bag.

It is so important that anyone who knows how Philip’s bag came to be in the laneway makes contact.
 
Gardaí at Rathfarnham Garda Station  are investigating Telephone 01 6666500

The Gardaí at Finglas Garda Station are investigating a shooting incident that occurred on Friday 8th April 2016 at approximately 6.15pm at a car park in Charlestown Place, Finglas, Dublin 11.

There was a number of people in the car park and at the drive thru services at a local restaurant. A man armed with a firearm in his left hand fired a number of shots in the car park. One of the bullets penetrated the side of a car as it was exiting the drive thru restaurant, the bullet travelled through the vehicle and through a booster seat where a four year old child was sleeping. Luckily the bullet stopped when it reached the cover of the seat and the child was not injured.

The gunman made his getaway in a silver Volkswagan Golf registration number 02MH7775. The car was purchased using a false name and address.

 Appeal:

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone on the Charlestown Shopping Centre that may have witnessed this shooting to come forward.

• The Volkswagan Golf car registration number 02MH7775 was purchased on the 4th April and Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information about the whereabouts of this car between the 4th April and 8th April to come forward.

• This car left Charlestown and onto the M50 and travelled to Shancastle Crescent, Clondalkin and was set alight. Gardaí believe the suspects made their getaway from this location towards Fonthill.

The Gardaí at Greystones Garda Station are investigating the discharging of firearms incident that occurred on Saturday 12th December 2015 at Farrankelly Road, Greystones, Co. Wicklow at approximately 11.30am.

The injured party was travelling along the Farrankelly road when he observed an incident taking place, a number of shots were discharged from a long barrel gun. Two shots connected with the injured party’s car causing damage to it.

It was 11.30am in the morning and there were a lot of people in the area, the Farrankelly Road is the main road leading to Greystones Village.

A number of witnesses in the area at the time recall seeing a silver Audi estate car parked on the Farrankelly Road. There was also a white van, possibly a Ford Transit or a Renault Traffic parked just before Eden Gate on the Farrankelly Road.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to this incident on that Saturday morning to come forward.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the area at the time of this incident to come forward, between 11am and midday in the Greystones and Kilcoole area. The weather was particularly wet that day.

• Gardaí are looking for information in relation to the Audi estate car, possibly an A4 06-08 model and the white Ford Transit or Renault Traffic van that were parked on the Farrankelly Road that morning.

The Gardaí at Salthill Garda Station are re-appealing for information in relation to the discovery of human remains at 158 Upper Salthill on the 17th April 2002.

The owner of this property was carrying out excavation work in the back garden and discovered human remains wrapped up in a sleeping bag buried in a shallow grave. There were also a number of items of clothing including, boots, jewellery and hair ties in the sleeping bag.

A full examination of the scene was carried out and a post mortem on the remains. An investigation was launched with Gardaí establishing that this property was used as a squat over the years by a number of people. Their enquiries led them to a man known as “Dave”, who busked around Galway, particularly on Shop Street, an area known locally as “the four corners”. He played guitar and tin whistle. He always had his pet collie dog with him.

Gardaí believe Dave was originally from the UK and the last known sighting of him was in 1999. Gardaí believe he was buried at 158 Upper Salthill almost two years before his remains were discovered. Gardaí also believe he may have been known as “Dave Rawson” or “Dave Tang”, but are unsure if that was his real name.

Gardaí recently appeared on Crimewatch UK, where over 5 million people tuned in, a number of new information was received that Gardai are hoping may develop the investigation.

The Gardaí at Roxboro Road Garda Station are investigating a distraction burglary that occurred on Wednesday 30th December 2015 at Raheen Gardens, Raheen, Co. Limerick.

A woman was at home alone in Raheen Gardens when a man called to the house purporting to be from an electricity company and requested to read the electricity meter in the woman’s home. The woman agreed to this and allowed the man into her home to check the meter. The man engaged the woman in conversation for a short time. The woman then saw a second unknown man leaving the house and became alerted, both men then fled from the house. The woman discovered a sum of cash missing from her purse which was in an upstairs bedroom.

The Gardaí at Arklow Garda Station are looking for information on the current whereabouts of fifty one year old Frederick Lee who absconded from lawful custody at Shelton Abbey prison in Arklow on Wednesday 4th March 2016 between 6.30am and 7.30am.

His home address is O’ Donoghue Park, Bessbrook, Newry, Co. Down. He is also known to frequent Killcross Court, Sandyford and Druids Court, Ballymun, Dublin 11.

He is described as being five foot nine inches in height, brown hair and blue eyes.

The Gardaí at Kevin Street Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to an incident that occurred on Thursday 18th August 2016 at Golden Bridge Industrial Estate, Dublin 8.

Between the hours of 6am and 7am, the injured party was working in the Industrial Estate unloading his vehicle when he heard a male shouting from an apartment block at Oblate View, Inchicore, Dublin 8. A few moments later, a man appeared in front of the injured party and began to shout at him, this man then punched the injured party into the face and eyes a number of times causing him to fall onto the ground and as he was on the ground he saw a second man appear who began to kick him. The males then fled the scene. The injured party in the case received serious injuries to his face including three broken teeth, broken bone in his nose, a fractured eye socket and is in danger of losing his eye.

He compiled the detailed EVOFIT below along with a description as follow, six foot tall, well built, approx. 45-50 years old, black hair with grey streak, spoke with a strong Dublin Accent, wearing white vest with blue jeans.

The second suspect is described at five foot eight inches in height of slim build, approx. 18-20 years old wearing blue jacket, blue tracksuits bottoms and blue cap.

The Gardaí at Blackrock Garda Station are investigating a burglary that occurred in the early hours of Saturday 14th May 2016.

The victim was in bed and awoke when he heard a noise downstairs and went to investigate. The victim observed one male outside the side door of the kitchen and jumping over a back wall and he followed him outside. A confrontation occurred between the two men resulting in the victim being struck on the head with an implement.

The suspect then got into the passenger side of the victim’s car a red Audi A6 registration number 12d18600. This car has not been recovered to date.

The victim compiled a detailed EVOFIT of the man who is described as six foot two to six foot four in height of slim build, clean shaven and speaking with a Dublin accent.

Gardaí at Kilkenny Garda Station are investigating a burglary that occurred on Monday 21st November 2016 at Linton Drive, Kilkenny.

Between 4pm and 7pm while the house was unoccupied a front window was forced open. A substantial amount of cash and jewellery were stolen during the burglary including two ladies gold chains, a pearl necklace, two gold bracelets and two pairs of gold earrings.

One witness recalled seeing a man acting suspiciously in the area at the time of the burglary. The witness compiled an EVOFIT, the man was described as being in his mid twenties, between five foot eight to five foot ten inches in height with a goatee beard. He was wearing a black or dark coloured wool hat and a light coloured hooded jumper, possibly orange in colour.

The Gardaí at Blanchardstown Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to a robbery that occurred on Wednesday 20th July 2016 at approximately 6.15pm

The injured party was walking in Rathmore Village, Tyrellstown, Dublin 15 when he was approached by two men. One of the men stated that he had a knife and told the injured party to drop his phone which he did. The two men then pushed the injured party to the ground and punched him several times resulting in minor injuries.

Gardaí at Blanchardstown Garda Station are investigating     Telephone 01 6667000

The Gardaí at Templemore Garda Station are investigating a robbery from the person that occurred on Thursday 30th June 2016 at Dromard, Clonmore, Co. Tipperary.

The victim had just returned home and was sitting in her car which was parked in the front yard of her house. It was approximately 10.40pm. The woman heard her dog barking and looked up to see a man walking into the yard. The woman got out of her car and spoke to the man. He said he was looking for directions to Limerick. The man then punched the woman to the left side of her face causing her to fall to the ground. The man then grabbed the strap of her handbag which was on her shoulder and pulled at the handbag. The man ran out the front gate and got into a white van that drove in the direction of Clonmore.

The victim compiled an Evofit, the culprit was described as six foot in height of stocky build with a chubby face, fair hair, thinning on top and aged in his late forties. He spoke with a foreign accent

The Gardaí at Killarney Garda Station are investigating the disappearance of Charles Brooke Pickard who is missing from his home at Behaghane, a townland on the Iveragh Peninsula near Sneem, Co.Kerry since Friday 26th April 1991.

Brooke lived here with his wife Penny and four children, their house is situated 3.5km from Castlecove and 6km from Caherdaniel. He was originally from Leeds in the United Kingdom but set up home here with his family. On that Friday morning he left home at 10.30am with a view to calling to a neighbour to collect turf but he never arrived. He was wearing blue overalls, brown boots with yellow laces and a wristwatch with a silver bracelet strap. He was driving his blue Ford Transit van registration number YNP231W.

A number of witnesses in the area recall seeing Brooke travelling on the Castlecove road towards Sneem. A witness observed Brook’s van proceed down a slipway towards White Strand. As Brooke parked his van, a male wearing a balaclava came running from the bushes behind Brooke’s van. This man appeared to be beckoning as if there was somebody coming behind him.

Gardaí believe there was a struggle here between Brooke and a number of men and Brooke was abducted and transported from this location in his own van to an unknown area.

Brooke’s van was observed driving at speed from the Castlecove direction towards Caherdanial.

Penny reported Brooke missing the following day and an investigation was launched by local Gardaí. Brooke’s van was discovered destroyed by fire in a State Forest at Shronaloughnane on the 16th May 1991. Shronaloughnane is a location close to the road leading to the Ballaghosheen Pass from the Caherciveen to Sneem road.

• Twenty five years on Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information about the disappearance and abduction of Brooke to come forward.

• Gardaí are appealing to landowners in the area that may have recovered tools such as shovals, spades, pick axes on their land at the time of Brooke’s disappearance to come forward.

• Brooke’s van was recovered at Shronaloughnane, Gardaí are appealing to farmers in the area that may have seen suspicious activating on the morning of Friday 26th April 1991 to come forward.

Gardaí at Ardee Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to a fatal hit and run traffic collision that occurred in the early hours of Sunday the 11th May 2014.

Thirty five year old Keith Byrne was socialising with friends in an area known as Channonrock on Saturday evening. He left to walk to his home only a short distance away. A taxi driver passing discovered Keith’s body lying on the roadway. He was later pronounced dead. Keith’s father had to identify his son. He was buried last Friday the 16th May 2014 at Louth Village Cemetery.

Appeal:

• Gardaí are making a direct appeal to the driver of the vehicle involved in this fatal collision to come forward and they will be treated sensitively.

• Gardaí are reviewing CCTV from the area in the hope of developing this investigation and appealing to motorists who were in the area of Channonrock, Carnalogue and Monavallet between the 4.20am and 4.50am to come forward.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to this incident to come forward.

Gardaí at Drogheda Garda Station are investigating, Telephone 041 9874200 

Gardaí at Cashel Garda Station responded to a call reporting a road traffic collision nearby on the Clonmel to Cashel road on the evening of 12th July 2008.

When the Gardaí arrived at the scene, they remarked that the area was similar to a bomb site. Two vehicles were involved in the collision, a black Audi A5 and a red Audi TT.

The driver of the red Audi TT was killed and died at the scene. The black Audi A5 landed on a house where a family had gathered to attend a relative’s anniversary mass. The Audi landed in the first story of a house, right under the chimney, a wall collapsed into a kitchen full of people. The first aid kit from the boot of the Audi was found in the attic. This car dropped and landed on a child outside the house. Somebody saw the child’s runner and sock under the car.  There was a forklift in the yard and the family used the forklift to get the car off the child. Six people ended up in hospital.

The Forensic Collision Unit were contacted and Sergeant John Moore and Sergeant Frank Lavin arrived at the scene the following day to start their investigation. They spent 6 hours surveying the scene and gathering evidence and two weeks putting the report and details together. The report established that speed was a major contributing factor in the collision.

The driver of the black Audi pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and serious harm.

On this month’s Crimecall, we highlighted the work of the Forensic Collision Investigators in this collision in Cashel which assisted in convicting the driver of the black Audi with dangerous driving causing death and serious harm.

On this month’s programme we featured three incidents on fraud where the injured party had their credit or debit card stolen and subsequently used at various locations to purchase items and withdraw cash.

Detective Superintendent Gerard Walsh from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau was in studio talk about a scam known as “Invoice Redirect”. One form of Invoice redirection is when fraudsters use information posted online and on social media accounts. One example of this type of fraud see accounts departments in companies being sent an email asking to change banking details for an existing creditor for payment of an invoice and typically the sender’s email address will look almost identical to the genuine one with just a letter or a dot in the wrong place.

The Gardaí at Roxboro Road Garda Station are appealing for information on Missing Person Aengus (Gussie) Shanahan who is missing from his home in Ashbrook, Limerick since February 2000.

Twenty year old Gussie worked in Dell, he normally travelled to and from work using varies methods of public transport. Gussie didn’t drive and did not own a mobile phone. On Friday the 11th February 2000, Gussie finished work at 3pm. He got paid that day and travelled to Limerick City and withdrew £100 from a Bank of Ireland ATM. His father Bob worked at the bank and Gussie met him there and returned £60 he had borrowed from him the week before. Gussie then went across the road to Supermacs and met a friend. They discussed their plans for the evening. Gussie and two close friends travelled to a public house known at the time as Cooper’s Bar on St. Joseph’s Street. They had a couple of sociable drinks and chatted with other customers in the bar. The two friends were renting a house across the road from the pub. Shortly after 9pm one of the friends went home to prepare some food. The other friend followed shortly afterwards. It was arranged that Gussie would stay with them for the night. Gussie remained in the bar and had another drink.

He made two phone calls to some other friends to see if they wanted to meet up with him later in the night. One of the friend’s phone was unanswered and the other was working on an early shift the following morning so passed on the invitation.

Gussie was captured on CCTV leaving the pub and crossing the road towards his friend’s house. A witness recalled how she saw Gussie raise his hand as if to knock on the door and then lower it again. He did not knock on the door. He placed a bottle of beer he was holding onto the ground and put his jacket on and walked towards a laneway known locally as School Alley Lane. Gussie was never seen again.

An extensive investigation followed and several areas and rivers were searched. Gussie’s family have travelled the country looking for answers.
His Mother and Father, Bob & Nancy appeal for help from the public in the hope of finding Gussie. He would have been 36 years old on the 23rd of January 2016.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to the disappearance of Aengus (Gussie) Shanahan to come forward.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have seen Gussie on this Friday night or early the following morning to come forward, especially Taxi Drivers in the limerick area.

The Serious Crime Review Team at the National Bureau of Crime Investigation is continuing to investigate the disappearance of twenty six year old American woman, Annie McCarrick who is missing since Friday 26th March 1993.

Annie travelled to Ireland to study and was living in an apartment at St. Catherine’s Court, Sandymount with two other friends. On that Friday morning she was at home knitting and told her friends she may go for a walk in the Wicklow or Glencullen area.

At approximately 11am Annie purchased groceries from supermarket Quinnsworth on the Sandymount Road. She returned home to St. Catherine’s Court with the groceries and they were left on the kitchen table. Later that day at 3.15pm Annie took a bus from Sandymount to Ranelagh. Annie took the number 44 bus from Ranelagh to Enniskerry. There was no bus from Enniskerry to Glencullen, Annie would have had to walk the 6km’s to where she was next seen at Johnnie Fox’s public house, Glencullen.

Annie was formally reported missing by her mother Nancy, who travelled to Ireland on 30th March 1993.

Annie’s mother Nancy travelled to Ireland again to re-visit the places Annie went to on that Friday afternoon and evening. Annie’s father John sadly passed away

Annie was the only child of John and Nancy McCarrick, Annie would have turned forty nine on 21st March this year.

• Witnesses recall Friday 26th March 1993 as a cold, wet and windy day. Did you see Annie McCarrick in the Glencullen area and have not yet come forward?

Bridget Madigan was born on 30th August 1978, she is 38 years old and from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

Bridget was reported missing on 15th June this year by her family, they had not seen or heard from Bridget since February and are extremely worried for her welfare.

An extensive Garda investigation was carried out and established that Bridget had not collected her social welfare payments since February nor had she attended her local pharmacy for her medication. Her medical card has not been used.

Gardaí have also carried out enquiries in the United Kingdom as Bridget was known to have connections there. Bridget has not travelled on any airline or ferry since February.

An Garda Síochána and Bridget’s family are extremely worried about her safety and well-being and are appealing to her friends and associates or anyone with information in relation to her disappearance to come forward.

The Gardaí at Kilkenny Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to the disappearance of thirty one year old Dean Roche who is missing since Sunday 22nd March 2015.

Dean, from Hebron Park, Kilkenny lived here with his mother. On that Sunday morning, he left the house and told his mother he was going to be buying a car and would see her later. Dean travelled to the Ballyfoyle area of Kilkenny by a taxi where he purchased a car at approximately 7pm. This vehicle was found crashed short distance away. Witnesses in Newpark, Ballyfoyle area describe seeing Dean at 9pm that evening. That is the last confirmed sighting of Dean.

A number of searches have been carried out with the assistance of the Garda Search Unit, Garda Dog Unit, Garda Water Unit and the Army. A red Manchester United woollen hat, believed to be Dean’s was found during the searches.

Dean is described as being five foot eight inches in height, of slight build with green eyes and short brown hair. He was wearing a black zip up tracksuit top and bottoms with white runners.

Gardaí are appealing to Farmers in the Ballyfoyle area to check their farm houses and lands to assist in the search for Dean.

Gardaí at Clones Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to missing person Michael Anthony Lynch, (DOB 01/08/1947) who has not been seen since Sunday 6th January 2002.

At this time of his disappearance Michael was described at five foot eleven inches in height of medium build, with grey hair (receding). He was possibly wearing a sports jacket and was in possession of a Mitsubishi Galant registration number TIL 4670.

The Gardaí at Kilkenny Garda Station are looking for information in relation to missing person Valerijis Zimecs who has not been seen since Sunday 1st November 2016.

The last confirmed sighting of Valerijis was at Talbot Court in Kilkenny. He is described as six foot tall, fifteen stone in weight, with black hair and brown eyes. He is forty six years old and originally from Latvia.

Gardaí at Laytown Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to the disappearance of William Maughan and Anastasija Varslavene who are missing since Tuesday the 14th April 2015.

William and Anastasija had been together since late last year and lived in a caravan in Gormanston, Co. Meath. William had decided to return to his family home in Tallaght with Anastasija. His Mother and Father, Helen & Joe, were making arrangements for their return and were excited about their move. William had sold his caravan on Monday the 13th April and it was collected the following day.

On Tuesday morning William went to Balbriggan followed shortly afterwards by Anastasija. They ran some errands and made contact with William’s mother Helen to arrange for her to travel from Tallaght to Gormanston to collect them and their belongings.

William spoke to his mother at about 2.30pm and asked her to make her way out to Gormanston to collect them. William and Anastasija got a taxi together from Balbriggan to Gormanston just shortly after 2.30pm. Helen arrived in Gormanston just before 3pm but could not locate William. She drove to Stamullen to look for him but didn’t find him. She returned to Gormanston and called his mobile phone but it went straight to message minder.

William and Anastasija never showed up and Helen became extremely worried. They were reported missing that evening. 

Extensive searches and enquires were carried out and a thorough investigation commenced, including enquiries with all Airports, Ferry Ports & Interpol.

Both families and the Gardaí are extremely concerned for William & Anastasija’s safety and well being.

The Gardaí at Cabra Garda Station are investigating the murder of thirty three year old Darren Kearns who was fatally wounded in the car park of a public house on Blackhorse Avenue, Dublin 7 on Wednesday 30th December 2015.

Darren and his wife decided to go for an early evening meal and left their home at Ashtown in Dublin at approximately 3.30pm. Darren drove his wife’s car, a two door white Fiat 500. They had tried a couple of restaurants in and around the area, but they were closed. Their journey took them along Collins Avenue, Drumcondra where they decided to turn around outside Dublin City University and drive to a restaurant at Finglas which was also closed. They went to a service station at Clearwater Shopping Centre in Finglas where Darren purchased petrol.

After leaving the service station they decided to try a well known Chinese restaurant next to Cumiskey’s Public House on Blackhouse Avenue arriving here at approximately 4.45pm. Darren and his wife had their meal and left the restaurant just after 5.30pm. Darren’s wife was now driving. As they drove towards the exit a light coloured green 5 Series BMW M series, registration number 04D35151, entered the car park from the Baggott Road entrance and blocked their way. At this point a man appeared running beside the BMW carrying a firearm. He approached the couple’s car and fired at the victim.

The BMW exited onto Baggott road with the suspect getting into the rear drivers door. The car turned left onto Blackhorse Ave and drove at speed to Regal Park, where it turned left before being abandoned and set alight in a laneway there.

A man left the same laneway and ran to a waiting car. This car had its lights off and turned right at speed onto Blackhorse Avenue. It continued on Blackhorse Avenue before turning right onto Skreen road. The car then turned from Skreen road onto the Navan road.

 
Appeal:

• The car used in connection with this murder is a 5 series BMW M series, 4 door, light green, bearing its correct registration 04D35151. The car was purchased from a car buyer’s website on the 28th October 2015.The person who purchased the car supplied false details.

• Where was this car between 28th October and 30th December 2015.

• Any sighting of the couple in the white fiat 500 from the time they left their home at Ashtown (3.30pm approx.), until they arrived at the pub (4.45pm approx.)

• Sightings of the BMW after the shooting, especially at Regal Park where the car was abandoned and a man ran to a waiting car.

The Gardaí at Ronanstown Garda Station are investigating the murder of Dean Johnston that occurred on Wednesday the 25th May 2011.

At approximately 8.50pm Dean Johnston was sitting in the back of a red Volkswagen golf registration number 96D7503 on Moorefield Avenue just yards from his home. A lone gunman approached the car and fired shots in through the rear passenger window hitting Dean and killing him. He was taken by ambulance to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Dean was just 20 years old and was a fitness fanatic. He was hoping to become a fitness Instructor. 

An extensive murder investigation has taken place over the last number of years and the investigation team are of the belief that there are still witnesses out there who witnessed the murder or observed the gunman fleeing the scene and to-date have not come forward or are reluctant to give certain information to An Garda Siochana.

• Anyone in the Moorefield estate and Neilstown Road area at the time of the murder or in the hours prior to the incident to contact the Gardaí.

Gardaí at Dundalk Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to the murder of forty three year old Irene White who was fatally stabbed in her home on the 6th April 2005.

Irene, who was a mother of three children, had just returned home to her house known locally as “Ice House”, beside Ice House Hill Park. Irene was in the kitchen cleaning up the delph and cutlery after breakfast that morning.

At 12.30pm, Irene’s mother at the rear of the property discovered Irene’s body in the kitchen. She had been stabbed a number of times.

Gardaí believe that a man entered the kitchen and fatally stabbed Irene and fled over the back wall into Ice House Hill Park. There are four possible exits the man could have taken from the Park. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the park on the morning of the 6th April 2005 to come forward if they have not already done so. Gardaí would like to speak to cyclist, walkers, families & joggers who were in the Park that morning.

Irene’s daughter, Jennifer, now twenty eights makes an emotional appeal on the programme for answers and justice for her mother.

Gardaí in Bailieboro Garda Station are currently investigating the murder of forty eight year old John Kerins (DOB 22/2/1964) that was living alone at his home at Cornaveagh, Bailieboro, Co Cavan.

At 11am on 9th November 2012 a neighbour of John Kerins, called to his house as John had failed to turn up for an appointment that morning.  He entered the house through the front door and found John Kerins deceased in the front sitting room, he had been fatally shot.  He immediately made contact with Gardaí.
 
John was last seen alive at approximately 6pm on 8th November and later spoke to a friend on the telephone at 8.40pm where John indicated to him that he was staying in for the evening.

John’s wife Shirley makes an appeal for information and answers for her and their three children.

Gardaí in Lucan Garda Station are currently investigating the murder of forty one year old Mark Desmond (DOB) 20.03.1975 who was shot and fatally wounded at Griffeen Park, Lucan on Friday 2nd December 2016 at 7.30pm.

Appeal:

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the park between 6pm and 8.30pm that Friday evening to come forward, especially young people who were in the park and people exercising.
• Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to the getaway route and indeed the car, a blue Mazda 6, registration number 05D2928. This car was sold in mid October and recovered on fire at Hayden’s Lane, just a half a mile away from Griffeen Park. Gardaí are looking for information on the whereabouts of this car between these two months to come forward.
• Gardaí are interested in the movements of Mark Desmond on the day he was murdered and in the days and weeks prior to this date.

The Gardaí at Ballymun Garda Station are appealing for information in relation to the murder of twenty six year old Paul Kavanagh on Thursday 26th March 2015 at Church Avenue, Drumcondra, Dublin 9.

Paul was moving his partner’s car outside their home into a parking space on Church Avenue near “All Hallows” college, when his car was struck from behind by a white Audi A1 registration number 142D4628, forcing it forward and into the wall. A man wearing a black balaclava and a black bomber style jacket appeared on the road in front of Paul’s car and discharged a number of shots into his car. Paul attempted to reverse the car but collided with the Audi car. Another man appeared from this car. Paul was fatally wounded. The two suspects walked away from the scene and towards Ormond Road and turned into a laneway leading out to Clonturk Gardens and Clonturk Park.

• The Audi A1 car (white in colour with a black roof) was stolen on Wednesday 11th March 2015 from Palmerstown, Dublin 20. Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information about the whereabouts of this car between 11th March 2015 and the 26th March 2015.

• Where you in the Drumcondra area on the 26th March between 9am and 12pm.

• Did you see anything on Church Avenue, Ormond Road or Clonturk area that morning?

This month’s “On Patrol” segment we followed Garda Paul Conroy, the senior Dog Handler with the Garda Dog Unit.

Garda Conroy was accompanied by three of his dogs, Deefer, an eight year old general patrol German Sheppard dog who specialises in missing person cases, armed incidents and public order incidents. To illustrate Deefer’s skills he engaged in a training exercise where a male ran from a car into a wooded area, Deefer’s job was to find him which he diligently did. Next we met Flynn, a black Labrador who has over his eight year career recovered almost €20 Million worth of drugs.

Operational Support Unit, Harcourt Square, Dublin 2     

Gardaí in the Louth Division as part of ‘Operation Thor’ have launched ‘Operation Scale’, an initiative to tackle organised crime and the complexities of policing the Louth division given its proximity to the border.

Crimecall visited Gardaí in Dundalk as they carried out a series of searches involving local units, together with the assistance of a variety of specialist national units.

Superintendent Gerard Curley was in studio to discuss the operation and its successes that have seen a reduction in serious crime including Burglaries, Thefts, property crime, with over a million Euro returned to the revenue and several prosecutions brought before the courts.

The Gardaí at Monaghan Garda Station are investigating a fatal hit and run collision that occurred on the 26th of June 2011.

In the early hours of Sunday the 26th of June 2011 Fintan Traynor, who was just twenty years old, was killed when a car struck him as he walked home to Lemgare Road, Co. Monaghan. This road links the village of Clontibret and Annyalla with Derrynoose and Keady, Co. Armagh.

Fintan had attended a family reunion on Saturday the 25th of June with family members from Australia who returned for a four week holiday. Fintan and his cousin Ciaran travelled to Castleblayney where they met up with more friends and continued to socialise in the town. Just before 2am Fintan and his cousin Ciaran were walking along the main street in Castleblayney and stopped to talk to a cab driver who gave them a lift home to their uncle’s house in Annayalla where Ciaran was staying. They said goodnight and Fintan left to walk the 3 kilometres to his own home. This would have taken just thirty minutes. About one kilometre up the road, a neighbours CCTV camera shows a figure passing at 2.41am.

Early on the Sunday morning, Fintan’s uncle who had travelled from Australia took an early morning walk with his wife down the quiet country road towards Lemgare Road. They came across the body of Fintan lying on the road. He had been struck by a car.

Appeal:

• Gardaí are appealing to the owner/driver of the offending vehicle which now know to be an Audi A.4 car to come forward.

• Gardaí are appealing to the driver of the car which travelled from Tasson (Murphys Cross) towards Lemgare at 3.31a.m. on 26th June, 2011 to come forward.

• Gardaí are appealing to garages & vehicle repair workshops/suppliers of car parts on both sides of the border to come forward and assist in the investigation.

• Gardaí are appealing to any other persons who were socialising in the area at this time or who travelled through this area on the morning of the 26th June to come forward.

• The road where the collision occurred is not widely used by the public and Gardaí believe that there may be some people locally who might have valuable information and have not yet come forward. They may have noticed a car of this description which was damaged or some person whose mood swings or behaviour which may have may changed. The person involved may have confided to some close friend or family member about the accident.

Gardaí at Clogherhead Garda Station are investigating a robbery from a supermarket that occurred on Tuesday 3rd May 2016 at 3.40pm.

The manager and two staff members were working in the supermarket and post office on this Tuesday afternoon. A blue colored Audi car drove into the car park of the supermarket, there were three men in the car all wearing high visibility jackets. The three men got out of the car and ran towards the shop. The men were all armed, one of the men was armed with a firearm, and the others with a crowbar and a sledge hammer. Two of the men ran towards the office where the manager and another member of staff were. The raider burst in through the door and demanded money. The raider left the office and the manager called the Gardaí on her mobile phone.

The raider with the sledge hammer began to bang on the door leading to the post office and eventually broke in through the door. The three raiders went into the post office and threatened the member of staff demanding money. The raiders stole a sum of money and fled from the shop into the Audi car. They turned right out of the car park and drove in the direction of the coast road. The manager ran out to the car park and memorized the registration number of the car.

Gardaí arrived at the scene within minutes and began a search for the car, registration number 00RN3800. The Audi car was located in a field close to the coast road, the car was on fire.

Appeal:

• Shortly before 3.30pm two walkers recall seeing a blue Audi car, registration number 00RN3800 travelling from the direction of Clogherhead Village and turn right into the Ard Na Mara estate and park there for a number of minutes before exiting the estate and travelled towards the village.

• A blue Skoda Octavia was observed near the field where the Audi car was abandoned and set alight. Gardaí believe a woman with distinctive red hair was driving the Skoda car.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the area on Tuesday 3rd May 2016 who may have seen suspicious activity to come forward.

Gardaí at Drogheda Garda Station are investigating, Telephone 041 9874200 

The Gardaí at Drogheda Garda Station are investigating a robbery that occurred at the Funtasia Casino on the Donore Road on Sunday 21st August 2016.

At approximately 6pm, two members of staff had just started their evening shift and were in the process of getting organised and counting their float. There were a number of customers on the premises. Suddenly four masked and armed men entered the Casino through a side door. Three of the men made their way to the Kiosk while one of the men stood watch at the door. They threatened customers and told them not to move. One of the raiders demanded the cash float from the staff. The raiders broke the door of the cash kiosk and filled a green plastic bag with notes and coins.

The four raiders then fled from the Casino through the side door, the raiders wore grey and black clothing, one of the raiders wore a Halloween Mask. They spoke with local accents.

Appeal:

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the area attending the Funtasia Casino on the Donore Road before or after this robbery to come forward.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have seen the raiders making their getaway to come forward.

• Gardaí are anxious to speak with the driver of a black car that was seen exiting the car park at the same time as the raiders fled from the casino to come forward.

• Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have come across Funtasia Tokens that were stolen during the robbery, these are small gold coins with no value along with a coin tray.

• Gardaí are appealing to members of the local community that may have information about this robbery to come forward.

The Gardaí at Carlow Garda Station are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at a post office on Staplestown Road on Tuesday 1st December 2015.

At approximately 11.10am, a dark coloured Vauxhall Insignia car. Registration number 11W1774 pulled up on the road outside the post office. The post office is located at the rear of the shop. Three masked men got out of the car and ran into the shop and towards the post office. There were a large number of customers in the shop and at the post office at the time. The raiders attempted to gain entry to the post office and attempted to smash the glass. Two of the raiders were armed with a crowbar and a sledgehammer. The third raider was struck on the head with the crow bar during the attempted raid.

The raiders abandoned their attempt and fled from the shop to the waiting Vauxhall Insignia car which was waiting outside. The car travelled at speed in the direction of Pollerton Road.

The Insignia car was later found a short distance away, with its engine running at the Paddocks housing estate on the Brownshill Road.

The Vauxhall Insignia was stolen during the course of a burglary between the evening of Monday 30th November and the early hours of Tuesday 1st December. The registration of the car is 11W1774. This registration was on the car at the time of the attempted robbery and when it was located after 5pm at the Paddocks.

A blue 5 series BMW was seen at the location in the Paddocks were the insignia was abandoned.

Appeal:

• Gardaí are exploring the possibility that the men transferred into the 5 series BMW car that was parked at the Paddocks estate where the Vauxhall Insignia was recovered.

• The raiders all wore dark clothing and were of stocky build, two of the raiders were armed, the third raider did not appear to be armed.

• Gardaí are asking the public to consider all the elements to this case, the descriptions of the men, the unauthorised taking of the Insignia car at Bunclody together with the possible transfer to the 5 series BMW and to attempt to nominate possible suspects for this crime.

• The fact that one of the raiders struck his accomplice accidently may have resulted in injury or may have been discussed by the men following the attempted robbery.

The Gardaí at Blanchardstown Garda Station are investigating a serious incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday 8th May 2016 at Lohunda Dale in Blanchardstown.

Siobhán Gerathy had been out in Dublin City Centre with friends on the Saturday night, herself and her friend left Harcourt Street shortly after 3am and got a taxi home.

Just after 3.30am Siobhán was discovered unconscious and with injuries on the road at Lohunda Dale by neighbours who called an ambulance to take her to hospital for medical treatment. Siobhán had a serious injury to her head and was in a coma for a number of weeks.

Gardaí conducted an extensive investigation resulting in over 200 lines of enquiries, including door to door enquiries, witness interviews and trawling CCTV. But Gardaí are still looking for the assistance of the public in relation to this incident and area appealing to anyone with information to come forward, or anyone who Gardaí have not spoke to yet, including, bus drivers, taxi drivers, pedestrians and cyclist who may have information.

Gardaí at the Stolen Cars Unit, National Bureau of Criminal Investigations are investigating a recent car scam that left the victim several thousand Euros out of pocket.

Between Wednesday evening the 24th August and Thursday morning the 25th August 2016 a white 320 BMW car was stolen from a private house in Tallaght.

On Sunday the 28th August a couple were searching the internet looking for a new car. They came across a 2010 White BMW 320 for an extremely good price of €7800. They carried out a number of checks including checking the car registration number. Everything appeared legitimate. They made contact with the seller and arranged for a viewing of the car the following day. They met with the seller, who presented herself as Lisa and took the car for a test drive and were extremely happy with the car. They made an offer and purchased the car the next day. They received a pre-signed log book from Lisa and forwarded to the Vehicle Licensing Office in Shannon, Co. Clare.

Less than a week later, Gardaí from the Stolen Cars Unit called to the couple’s home and informed them that they had bought a stolen car that had been fitted with a cloned registration number. Gardaí seized the vehicle and the couple were at a loss of over €7000.

Gardaí at Tallaght Garda Station are investigating a recent car scam that left the victim several thousand Euros out of pocket.

On Sunday 14th August 2016 a black ford S-MAX car registration number was stolen during a burglary in Tallaght, Dublin 24.

This car was later advertised for sale online using a cloned registration number plate. A potential buyer made contact with the seller, who said his name was Luke and they arranged to view the car. On Thursday 25th August 2016 at City West Shopping Centre a man presented himself to the buyer as the father of the seller, Luke. The buyer took the car for a test drive and made an offer to purchase it. A pre-signed logbook was presented to the buyer and the money was handed over.

The next day, the buyer closely examined the logbook as he thought it looked worn and washed. He discovered the chassis number on the log book did not match the chassis number on the car. He reported the matter to Gardaí who discovered the car was stolen.
The logbook, tax disc and NCT disc were all false documents.

The buyer’s brother, who was suspicious of the seller, took a number of photographs of him on his mobile phone. This man is described as being aged between forty five and fifty years old, six foot tall, slim build, short grey hair and a number of tattoos on his arms, wearing check blue and white shorts with a white t-shirt and white runners.

Garda Cloughley also discussed road fatalities during 2015 with specific reference to December.

Garda Cloughley reminded Novice/Learner drivers of their obligation under the Road Traffic Act, including their obligation to display a Learner Permit and to be accompanied by a fully qualified driver for two years.

Drink Driving detections are up 6.5% on this time last year, An Garda Siochána’s Christmas Campaign will be launched on December 1st, this will include high visibility checkpoint’s throughout the country.

On this month’s traffic segment, Garda Derek Cloughley was in studio to discuss the recent Safety Camera Expansion 2016. Despite excellent progress over the last decade or so, road traffic collisions still remain a significant cause of death and injury in Ireland. Each year almost 200 people are killed and close to 6,000 are injured on the Irish road network.

Measures to reduce traffic speed are considered key to reducing casualties on the road. Increasing use of technology is seen as the way forward in the battle against road deaths. In Ireland, speed or safety cameras are one technological innovation used to help reduce traffic speeds, traffic collisions, and casualties. A major expansion of the safety camera network has been underway in Ireland since 2010.

On this month’s traffic segment, Garda Derek Cloughley was in studio to offer advice to the public in relation to remaining safe on the roads during the holiday period.

Garda Cloughley gave a breakdown of the fatalities on the roads for the first six months of the year. The advice focused on the summer being a high risk period as a result of people travelling in unfamiliar surroundings, an increase in the use of agricultural vehicles and motorcycles on our roads. This coupled with people being generally off their guard while on holiday can result in an increase of collisions during this period.

On this month’s traffic segment, Garda Derek Cloughley was in studio to offer advice to the public in relation to road fatalities year to date, so far this year there have been 138 road deaths, 23 more than this date last year and 54 deaths since our last programme in June.

Garda Cloughley is specifically appealing to road users in relation to “Lifesaver” Offences which are Distractions (Mobile Phones), Safety Belts, Speeding and Intoxicated Driving.

On this month’s traffic segment Garda Derek Cloughley was in studio to discuss "driver distraction" and how seemingly simple things affect a drivers ability to react, especially in a sudden or emergency situation. 

The most obvious example of how a driver is distracted are mobile phones, talking, texting or data/ internet use  – however there are many more that interfere with the task of driving. There was a practical demonstration in studio using the RSA’s reaction test machine that has the ability to test reaction time, and how this is affected by distraction.

On this month’s traffic segment Garda Derek Cloughley followed on from the Forensic Collision feature that was broadcast. Garda Cloughley discussed speeding and the catastrophic consequences of such action. The Road Safety Authority will publish the findings of a pre-crash behaviour analysis in relation to speed on the 28th April at their annual safety conference, in advance of the May Bank Holiday. Garda Cloughley advised the public on a number of safety issues surrounding this topic.

Garda Cloughley also discussed defective tyres and the new Fixed Charge Notice and 2 penalty points and a fine that can now be issued for defective tyres.

There are a number of ways to detect a Drunk Driver and Garda Cloughley explored these. Garda Cloughley also gave advice to pedestrians to plan their journey home if they are socialising over the Christmas Season and to use a local taxi service or have a designated driver to take them home safely.

On this month’s traffic segment, Garda Derek Cloughley focused on Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act (1961-1994). Gardaí carry out thousands of checkpoints every year and seize vehicles under this act for having no insurance, no tax, no driving licence or no NCT on their cars. We followed Garda Cloughley to a checkpoint on a normal busy afternoon, a number of vehicles were seized for having no insurance or a valid NCT.

Such vehicles pose a threat to other road users and increase your Insurance Premium if you are involved in a collision with an uninsured car. Also there are huge risks of serious injury if you are involved in a collision with a car that has no NCT and is defective. The aim of this checkpoint is to take such vehicles off the road, they are brought to a nearby car pound where they are stored and scraped if they are not collected within three weeks.
