The woman had been at a party with close friends nearby. She changed into warm outdoor clothes for the walk home and left the party with a friend. They walked together to some nearby shops and said goodnight, the woman continued on alone for her short walk home up the Cookstown Road. It was approximately 4.40am. As she was walking along she noticed a man standing near the bus stop, so she crossed the road to avoid him.
The man called out to the woman and asked for a cigarette, she told him she didn’t have any and kept on walking. The man than ran across the road and grabbed the woman, he punched her in the face three times knocking her to the ground. He kicked her in the head and pressed a sharp implement to her neck.
He forced her to remove some clothing while on the side of the road and forced her across the road into the grounds of an apartment block. He brought her over to a grassy area covered with trees and shrubbery, where he viciously attacked her. The attack lasted over an hour.
