Notre Dame v Navy American Colleges Football Classic at the Aviva Stadium 26 August 2023

An Garda Síochána advise of the following traffic information concerning the Notre Dame v Navy American Colleges Football Classic event at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin 4 on Saturday 26th August 2023.

The traffic information has been prepared in consultation with Dublin City Council, the National Transport Authority, the event promoter and the Aviva Stadium.

An Garda Sióchána would like to stress that all patrons should be aware of the Colour Coded Entry Routes to the Aviva Stadium (Finding Your Entry Point | Aviva Stadium), see below, which will be clearly identified on their tickets and information for both participating teams which will be strictly enforced to ensure public safety.

Patrons should leave plenty of time to find their route and approach the venue with these routes in mind. After the event, everyone will have to exit the venue by the route they came in.

An Garda Síochána encourage those attending this event to walk to the Aviva Stadium as it is within a short distance from Dublin City Centre or use Public Transport services which are available through www.transportforireland.ie/events

Parking Restrictions

From 7am on the 26th August 2023 on the morning of the event, parking will be prohibited at the following locations adjacent to the Aviva Stadium.

  • Lansdowne Road
  • Shelbourne Road
  • Havelock Square
  • Herbert Road
  • Lansdowne Lane
  • Northumberland Road – Both sides from Haddington Road to Lansdowne Road

There are no on street facilities for parking of private vehicles or coaches.  Pre booked private transport facilities will be provided at the RDS, Dublin 4. (see www.collegefootballireland.com/transportation for more information on private parking facilities).

All vehicles must be parked legally. Vehicles found in breach of parking regulations and guidelines will be subject to towing.

Provision is made for special needs parking who will be able to park inside the Aviva Stadium. Applications should be made in advance to the Aviva Stadium for a relevant permit. These vehicles must enter the stadium three hours prior to the start of the event and enter the Stadium parking via Herbert Road.

Patrons are requested to be aware that the Aviva Stadium is located in a primarily residential area. Patrons attending are requested to respect residents by behaving in an appropriate manner when arriving at and departing from the Stadium.

Road Closures – Pre Event

The following roads will be subject to roads closures and diversions by An Garda Síochána from 2pm:

  • - Bath Avenue,
  • - Londonbridge Road
  • - Lansdowne Road from Herbert Bridge to Shelbourne Road
  • - Lansdowne Park
  • - All side roads off the roads listed above will be closed to through traffic

The following roads will be subject to roads closures and diversions by An Garda Síochána from approx. 4.30pm:

  • Shelbourne Road
  • Lansdowne Road
  • Ballsbridge Avenue
  • Beatty’s Avenue
  • Herbert Road
  • Newbridge Avenue

Lansdowne Road DART level crossing barriers will close three hours prior to the event and remain down for the duration of the event to facilitate free movement of trains.  Pedestrians will transverse the railway line via the under-pass in the Aviva Stadium.  Vehicular Traffic will not be permitted when the DART level crossing barriers are down.

Road Closures – Post Event

The following roads will be subject to roads closures and diversions by An Garda Síochána until the event is finished:

  • Bath Avenue
  • Londonbridge Road
  • Lansdowne Road from Herbert Bridge to Shelbourne Road
  • Lansdowne Park
  • Shelbourne Road
  • Lansdowne Road
  • Ballsbridge Avenue
  • Beatty’s Avenue
  • Herbert Road
  • Newbridge Avenue

The following roads will be subject to additional roads closures and diversions by An Garda Síochána from approx. 10pm:

  • Northumberland Rd from the junction with Pembroke Rd to the junction with Clanwilliam Place

All road closures will be put in place and manned for the duration of the closure by An Garda Síochána as required to ensure that there is no un-authorised access to closed roads and to ensure that traffic moves freely outside of the closure area prior to and after the event.

Local Access

Access will be maintained for residents in so far as it is safe to do so, on production of valid driving licence and/or proof of address. It may be necessary to exclude all traffic from the above roads if the volume of pedestrian traffic is such as to be unsafe to allow vehicular traffic access. This may occur in the hours prior to the event or after the event when patrons are exiting the stadium. Access will be maintained for residents during the event as much as is possible.

Taxi

Taxi’s will be permitted to drop passengers prior to event on all access routes to the stadium.

There are no taxi pick up facilities in or around the Aviva Stadium after this event. Taxis will not be permitted into the road closure areas post event.

All Private hires must locate in the RDS for pick-ups.

Temporary Taxi Ranks will be provided at:

  • Merrion Square West
  • Beach Road, Irishtown

Traffic Diversions

Pre Event

An Garda Síochána will man and divert traffic away from the list of road closures provided above. 

All road users are advised to adhere to the listed road closures, the directions of An Garda Síochána and to avoid these routes from 2pm on Saturday 26th August 2023 until approx. 12.30am 27/8/23. 

Post Event

An Garda Síochána will man and divert traffic away from the list of road closures provided above. 

All road users are advised to adhere to the listed road closures, the directions of An Garda Síochána and to avoid these routes from 10pm on Saturday 26th August 2023. 

In addition to the road closure from Northumberland Rd from the junction with Pembroke Rd to the junction with Clanwilliam Place the following advice is provided:

  • South-bound traffic intent on accessing the Merrion Road (R118) from Grand Canal Street will be diverted at Clanwilliam Place onto Herbert Place, turn left onto Baggot Street Upper, onto Pembroke Road and turn right onto the Merrion Road (R118) outbound to their destination.
  • South-bound traffic intent on accessing the Merrion Road (R118) from Mount Street Lower will be diverted right at Warrington Place, onto Herbert Place, turn left onto Baggot Street Upper, onto Pembroke Road and turn right onto the Merrion Road (R118) outbound to their destination.
  • North-bound traffic on Merrion Road towards the city centre will be diverted onto Pembroke Road, Baggot Street Upper, and Baggot Street Lower and onward to their destination

Post event public transport services will be provided to transfer patrons by DART (Train) and buses to Dublin City and Greater Dublin locations.  Temporary taxi rank facilities have also been provided.

DART users will que for train services at Lansdowne Road DART Station adjacent to the Aviva Stadium.

All patrons walking are advised to adhere to directional signage.

Patrons using pre-arranged hospitality coach transfers post event will be facilitated on Northumberland Road and are advised to follow instructions provided by their hospitality provider.  Pedestrian queuing systems will be provided from Lansdowne Road and Northumberland Road and all patrons are advised to adhere to directional signage.

All patrons attending are advised to follow the directions and guidance from An Garda Síochána, Event Security, Event Stewards and Event Volunteers to ensure public safety.

Personal Safety

Patrons are advised to be aware of their own personal safety and security while attending the event. They should ensure the security of personal belongings while on route to and from the stadium i.e. purses/wallets/tickets/ mobile phones.

There is a no bag policy for this event, nothing larger than an A4 size will be permitted into the Stadium.  

Patrons who arrive by vehicle should also ensure that property is not left exposed in parked vehicles. They should ensure that car windows and sunroofs are correctly closed.
