Technical Bureau

Highly skilled teams from the Technical Bureau investigate major and complicated crime scenes throughout the StateThe Technical Bureau is based in Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park.

A Detective Chief Superintendent heads the Technical Bureau and reports to the Assistant Commissioner, Organised & Serious Crime. The Bureau has a staff of 130 Garda Members and staff.

Teams from the Bureau comprise experts in photography, ballistics, fingerprints and mapping. Using advanced equipment and techniques in the recovery and analysis of evidence, these highly skilled teams investigate major and complicated crime scenes throughout the State.

There are two ways of joining the Technical Bureau:

  • Garda Positions: Recruitment is from the ranks of An Garda Síochána.
  • Civilian Expert Positions: The Public Appointments Service advertises civilian expert positions and these posts are managed by the Civilian Human Resource Directorate.

After 5 years training and experiential learning in the different Bureau sections, a member of the Bureau will usually acquire expert status. During their 5 years of training, members attend relevant courses in their respective scientific fields both in Ireland and abroad. Once expert, members can undertake a 2 year Diploma Course in Crime Scene Investigation.
