Background: Denis Connolly, born on 31st July, 1957, came from Moyneard, Moyne, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. He joined An Garda Síochána on 3rd August, 1977. Garda Connolly was married. His spare-time activities included Gaelic football and hurling. He was associated with St. Paul’s Juvenile GAA Club, Lisduggan/Larchville, Waterford, Mount Sion and Garda hurling teams.

Circumstances:

On Monday, 11th July, 1983, Garda Connolly, with Sergeant Joseph Hurley, was on patrol in the Traffic Corps car from Waterford Garda Station along the Dungarvan/Waterford road, at Leamybrien. The patrol car and an articulated lorry, travelling in the opposite direction, collided. As a result of the collision the door of the patrol car was pushed against Garda Connolly, resulting in him receiving serious injuries. A passing ambulance conveyed Garda Connolly to hospital where he died from his injuries.
