National Day of Action - Mobile phone use while driving, Wednesday, 15th January 2025.

Issue Date: 16/01/2025

Between 7am yesterday morning, Wednesday 15th of January 2025 and 7am this morning, An Garda Síochána held a national day of action targeting the use of a mobile phone while driving.

During this 24-hour period, Gardaí detected 266 drivers using their phone while driving. Already this year, 762 motorists have received Fixed Penalty Notices (€120 fine and three penalty points on their licence) for this road traffic offence.

The daily average detected using their phone while driving during 2024 was 60. Over 21,500 drivers received FCPNs last year having been detected using their phone while behind the wheel.

Yesterday's detection rate therefore shows a four-fold increase.

Driving while on your phone distracts you and takes both your eyes and your full attention away from the road. This is highly dangerous and potentially life-threatening for you and other road users. Yet, there is a very simple and easy solution - just don't do it.
