€285,000 Drugs and Firearm Seized, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, 16th June 2024

Gardaí in Portlaoise have seized €285,000 worth of various controlled drugs and a firearm during a search operation in Portlaoise, County Laois on Sunday, 16th June 2024.

Shortly before 3pm on Sunday afternoon, Gardaí attached to the Laois Drugs Unit conducted a search of a property in Portlaoise as part of Operation Tara.

During the course of the search operation, large quantities of suspected cannabis herb, cocaine and MDMA were seized as well as a small quantity of suspected cannabis resin. The total value of drugs seized is €285,000. They are currently subject to analysis by Forensic Science Ireland (FSI).

A sawn-off shotgun and ammunition was also seized by Gardaí during the search of the residence. They are currently subject to forensic examination by the Garda Ballistics Unit.

One man (aged in his 40s) was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996, at a Garda station in the Eastern Region.

Investigations are ongoing.
