INTERPOL Operation Lionfish Hurricane - Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB)

Issue Date: 31st July 2024

An Garda Síochána continues to make significant strides in combating transnational organised crime through ongoing liaison with and participation in International Policing Interdiction Operations.

INTERPOL Operation Lionfish Hurricane, is a global initiative led by INTERPOL. This operation targets the trafficking of cocaine across three major regions: South America, West Africa, and Western Europe.

Following investigations carried out in this jurisdiction, linked with Operation Lionfish Hurricane since April 2024, Gardaí attached to the GNDOCB have made over 20 arrests, seized cocaine and other illegal drugs valued in excess of €9 million, and confiscated cash amounting to over €590,000.

Speaking about Ireland's participation in INTERPOL Operation Lionfish Hurricane, Detective Superintendent O’Reilly, Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, said:

"An Garda Síochána’s involvement in these international policing interdiction operations demonstrates our commitment to targeting transnational organised crime groups. These criminal groups do not respect international borders in spreading their harm and violence, but by the International Law Enforcement community working together we can take effective action disrupting their activities and keeping international communities safe.”

Since the commencement of the operation, twenty-four participating countries across South America, West Africa, and Western Europe have reported seizures to Interpol, identifying 19 destination countries, including Ireland.

Poly-crime seizures, including firearms, marine vessels, aircraft, and stolen motor vehicles, underscore the resourcefulness and extensive reach of transnational organised crime groups, which often engage in various types of crime to maximize their profits across multiple markets.

To date, this is the largest and most successful operation conducted by Interpol in terms of seizure volumes and values. Over 615 tons of drugs and illicit precursor chemicals have been seized, with a total value exceeding USD $1.6 billion.
