Operation Limelight - FGM Awareness, Shannon Airport, 5th April 2024

Issue Date: 5th April 2024

On Friday, April 5th, 2024, An Garda Síochána, in collaboration with AkiDwa, will host an Operation Limelight event at Shannon Airport.

This multi-agency initiative, organised by the National Child Protection Unit at the Garda National Protective Services Bureau, aims to raise awareness about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Ireland. The event will highlight the legal implications and the significant health risks faced by women and girls subjected to this practice.

Participating agencies include An Garda Síochána and AkiDwa, who provide accompaniment services. The operation is further supported by the Department of Justice and Tusla. Garda members from the Garda National Protective Services Bureau and the Clare/Tipperary Garda Division will be actively involved.

This operation coincides with the start of the Easter Holiday period, during which high passenger volumes are anticipated. Garda members will also engage with airport and airline staff as part of the initiative.
