An Garda Síochána officially open new Regional Office in the Dublin Metropolitan Region at Dublin Castle.
Earlier today, Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris and the Minister for Justice, Simon Harris T.D officially opened An Garda Síochána’s new regional office for the Dublin Metropolitan Region at Dublin Castle.
Through history, Dublin Castle has served as a base for policing not just in Ireland’s capital city but for the country as a whole. It was from here over a century ago that the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP) co-ordinated its policing plan.
Dublin Castle was also the location in 1922 where the first Garda Commissioner Michael Staines led Ireland’s new police service – the Civic Guard, later renamed An Garda Síochána - to take over policing duties from the British administration.
In 1925, the Póilíní Átha Cliath (DMP) became part of An Garda Síochána and the city of Dublin was then known in policing terms as the Dublin Metropolitan Division. An Garda Síochána has maintained its presence at Dublin Castle to this day, and several units operating across Dublin are now based at the location.
Under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner, DMR, Angela Willis, units operating across the region have now joined the DMR Roads Policing Unit and are centrally based at the premises in Dublin Castle having relocated from the former Harcourt Square campus.
These include; The Dublin Crime Response Team, the Garda Síochána Analysis Service (GSAS) for the DMR, Regional Source Management Unit, and the DMR Tasking and Co-ordination Unit.
Members of An Garda Síochána that work across the Dublin region serving a rising population of over 1.4 million people, often navigate very complex elements of policing. The DMR Regional Office will further strengthen the capabilities of An Garda Síochána to deliver a police service that keeps all those living, working and visiting our capital safe.
