Commemorative event to mark the 100th year anniversary of An Garda Síochána in County Kildare & Open Day at Kildare Town Garda Station
A family friendly day of events will take place in Kildare Town on Easter Saturday, April 16th from 11.45am to mark the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the Civic Guard / An Garda Síochána to County Kildare in 1922.
Events will begin with the arrival of a parade led by the Garda Band to Market Square, Kildare Town and an opening ceremony by Deputy Commissioner Anne Marie McMahon, the Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare Cllr. Naoise Ó’Cearúil and Marie Roche, Vice-President of the Garda Síochána Retired Members Association.
Lord Edward’s Own re-enactment group will re-create the handover of the old Royal Irish Constabulary Station to the Civic Guard/An Garda Síochána. The Garda Band will then lead a march to the site of the former Artillery Barracks on Dublin Road.
Kildare Garda Station will host an open day between 2pm – 6pm. This will be a great opportunity for the public to meet local Gardaí as well as many specialised units (including the mounted and dog units) that contribute to policing in Kildare and beyond.
The commemorative day is a joint approach by An Garda Síochána in Kildare, Kildare County Council’s Decade of Commemorations Committee, the Garda Síochána Retired Members Association and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (under the Decade of Centenaries 2012-23 initiative).
