UN International Anti-Corruption Day 09/12/2019

Monday, 9th December is UN International Anti-Corruption Day #UnitedAgainstCorruption

An Garda Síochána have taken steps to tackle bribery and corruption, primarily the establishment of a dedicated Anti-Corruption Unit in 2017 at the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau. The Unit is a ring fenced resource dedicated to the investigation and prevention of both foreign and domestic bribery and corruption.

  • The Anti-Corruption Unit is proactive in identifying cases of bribery and corruption.
  • The Anti-Corruption Unit liaises proactively with its national and international law enforcement partners.
  • A dedicated Confidential Line for the Reporting of Bribery and Corruption has been set up – 1800 40 60 80.  This line has received 117 calls to date, 33 in 2018, 84 to date in 2019.  Each call is assessed and if it does not fall within the remit of the Anti-Corruption Unit is forwarded to the relevant section for investigation.
  • A number of Regional Economic Crime Investigators have been trained in the investigation of bribery and corruption and that there is currently a training course ongoing.

The Unit’s remit includes the investigation of Foreign Bribery, cases of Domestic Bribery and Corruption of National Importance and Sports Corruption. The Unit also assists local units conducting Bribery and Corruption related investigations.

The Unit has carried out a number of searches and arrested and detained persons in relation to these investigations. To date, there have been no prosecutions arising from the Unit’s investigations. However numerous persons have been convicted of Bribery and Corruption following investigations conducted by An Garda Síochána.
