Update - Attempted ATM Robbery in Virginia, Cavan on the 14/8/19

In relation to the attempted theft of an ATM at Main Street, Virgina, Co. Cavan on Wednesday 14th August 2019, a 28 year old male who was arrested at the scene, is currently detained at Bailieborough Garda Station.

A 25 year old male and 61 year old male have been released without charge and a file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. 

Investigation is ongoing.

At 2:30am this morning Detective and Uniform Gardaí from the Cavan/Monaghan Garda Division assisted by colleagues from the National Garda Units intercepted an attempted Theft of an ATM at Main St. Virginia.

One 28 year old male was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at Carrickmacross Garda Station.

A second 25 year old male was arrested in Virginia this afternoon and is currently detained at Bailieborough Garda Station. Gardaí are continuing to conduct enquiries to locate a third suspect.

The scene at Virginia has been technically examined by Scenes of Crime Examiners from Cavan/Monaghan Garda Division. Separately a connected search operation took place this morning at Moynalty, Co. Meath. A 61 year old male was arrested during this operation and is currently detained at Kells Garda Station.

All three were arrested on suspicion of offences contrary to section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 and are detained in accordance with the provisions of section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.
 
During the search in Moynalty in excess of €300,000 was recovered. In addition a number of vehicles have been removed for further examination. Gardaí are continuing to conduct an examination and search at this location. This remains a live investigation and it is anticipated that further searches will be carried out in the immediate future.

An incident room has been established at Bailieborough Garda Station.

Gardai are appealing for anyone who travelled the Virginia/Bailieborough Road and/or were in Virginia town between 0100hrs – 0300hrs this morning particularly any driver with a vehicle with dashcam footage to contact the incident room at Bailieborough Garda Station (042) 9694570, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Gardaí investigating an attempted ATM robbery in Virginia Co Cavan this morning, Wednesday August 14th 2019 have arrested a third man in connection with this investigation in Virginia, he is currently detained in Bailieboro Garda Station under the provisions of Section 50 Criminal Justice Act 2007. 

The two men arrested earlier are detained at Carrickmacross and Kells Garda Stations. 

In a follow up operation in the Co Meath area a substantial amount of cash was recovered, the quantity to be confirmed.

Further searches are continuing this afternoon.

In the early hours of this morning Wednesday 14th August 2019 uniform and plain clothes Gardaí attached to Cavan/ Monaghan Garda Divisions supported by Garda National Units intervened in an attempted ATM robbery in Virginia, Co. Cavan. 

Two men have been arrested in connection with this investigation and are currently detained under the provisions of Section 50 Criminal Justice Act 2007.
