As part of an ongoing operation into the activities of Organised Crime gangs, Gardai from Special Crime Operations (SCO) assisted by the Emergency Response Unit and Armed Support Unit arrested four males (23,35,37 and 38 years) this evening the 6th November 2017 in the North Inner city of Dublin.
The four males have been arrested for conspiracy to murder. Gardai also seized a firearm and silencer (subject to ballistic examination).The four males are being detained under the provisions of section 50 Criminal Justice Act 2007. Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll, who is responsible for Special Crime Operations (SCO) within An Garda Síochána, states that that the arrests made today along with the associated seizure of a firearm represents a significant additional achievement in An Garda Síochána’s on-going and unrelenting effort to tackle organised crime and, in particular, the total disregard for human life exhibited by the criminals involved.
The Assistant Commissioner, who recently revealed that operations undertaken by An Garda Síochána and the Garda National Organised Crime Bureau (GNOCB), supported by other specialised units within the organisation, including the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and Armed Support Units (ARUs), in particular, has resulted in interventions in up to forty (40) circumstances where the planned assassination of targeted persons, by organised crime gangs, was involved.
Assistant Commissioner O’Driscoll said additional resources provided to Special Crime Operations (SCO) has enabled a crew of dedicated and highly skilled personnel to make significant inroads into tackling the activities of a number of major organised crime groups (OCGs), through arrests, seizure of high calibre weaponry and seizure of significant sums of money. He said "I continue to be heartened and assured by the level of absolute commitment and ‘top drawer’ professionalism and, indeed, bravery exhibited over and over again by the personnel within the Garda Síochána who are assigned to the difficult tasks associated with the operational activity involved”.
The Assistant Commissioner said An Garda Síochána will continue to target those criminals who consider themselves to be beyond the law and for this purpose are engaging in a very productive manner with other law enforcement authorities at both a national and international level. He said he is confident of continuing positive outcomes to the cooperation involved, both at home and abroad. Gardaí will hold a media briefing at 10am tomorrow morning the 7th November 2017 at Special Crime Operations(SCO) office Harcourt Square.
