Gardaí at Carlow have charged 14 people in connection with an operation designed to prevent crime, disrupt criminal activity and apprehend criminals wanted on warrant.
Six of those charged are due to appear before Carlow District Court this evening, Tuesday 13th September 2016 at 8.30pm.
A number of searches of dwellings were carried out by search teams deployed at each location. These locations were identified following on from investigations into recent crimes of burglaries and robberies which had taken place in the Carlow District.
45 people have been arrested as part of this operation.
1. Sixteen people were detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal justice Act 1984 as amended for various criminal offences.
2. Fourteen people have been charged with criminal offences and will be appearing before the courts
3. Twenty Eight people have been arrest under warrant.
4. Four people have been arrested on suspicion of committing an offence under section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, (sale and supply of controlled substances).
5. Four vehicles have been seized.
Gardaí monitored Operation Thor targets and the activities of local criminals by means of checkpoints. Crime Prevention leaflets were handed out to non-criminal members of the public to increase the awareness of protection of personal property and possessions. A total of 50 checkpoints are envisaged to be completed by end of operation.
A total of 70 Gardaí involved in the operation including local Gardaí, the Mounted Unit, Dog Unit and the Regional Support Unit. They are also being supported by 50 Trainee Gardaí from The Garda College, Templemore.
The officer in charge of today's operation Chief Superintendent Dominic Hayes of the Carlow/ Kilkenny Division said in relation to the Trainee Gardaí
"While providing an extra visible presence they gain valuable learning experience regarding the running of a major policing operation. They also get to observe the execution of warrants, arrests of suspects, prisoner management, conducting of checkpoints and community engagement".
