A total of 64 persons have been arrested by Gardaí during a day of action as part of Operation Thor in the Kilkenny/Carlow Division.
Twenty two (22) persons were detained under Section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984 for a range of matters including theft, assault, fraud, misuse of drugs and burglary offences.
Nine (9) persons were arrested for the purpose of charge and appeared before sittings of Carlow and Kilkenny District courts. A further thirty three (33) persons were arrested on the foot of committal and penal warrants.
A total of 29 houses and one business premises were searched in Kilkenny City, Urlingford and Castlecomer areas during the operation. Drugs (including Heroin, Ecstacy, Cannabis, Cocaine & Amphetamine) to the value of €34,000 (analysis pending) were seized. A grow house was also discovered at a house in Castlecomer where Cannabis plants with an estimated value of €4,000 (analysis pending) were also seized. A handgun (ballistic examination pending) was recovered during a search of a house in Kilkenny city.
60 checkpoints were carried out across the Division during the course of the day.
In excess of 130 Gardaí were involved in the operation along with 50 students from the Garda College. A visiting group of thirty (30) European Police Officers attended a briefing at Kilkenny Garda Station and were present at some of the checkpoints as observers.
Speaking at the commencement of the operation Chief Superintendent Dominic Hayes said, "The objective of the operation is to disrupt criminals living in and travelling through the Kilkenny/Carlow Division. Criminals will be deterred from committing crime in an area perceived as being heavily policed. This operation will also assist in the detection of criminal offences through proactive policing activities”

Gardai carrying our their day of action under Operation Thor in Kilkenny/Carlow Division have arrested a total of 35 persons, searched a total of 24 premises, seized drugs and one firearm.
The 35 persons were arrested in the Kilkenny/Carlow Division, 12 people were arrested under warrant and dealt with accordingly (taken to Court), 4 were charged and taken to court and a total of 19 prisoners are detained at Carlow (6), Kilkenny (8) and Thomastown (5) Garda Station under Section 4 of Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
A total of 24 premises were searched in Kilkenny city, Urlingford and Castlecomer, which are all dwellings with the exception of one premises. Drugs to the value of €34,000 (subject to analysis) were seized in these searches.
The firearm which was a handgun was seized during a search in Kilkenny city.

This morning, 6th October 2016, at 8am Gardaí began an Operation Thor Day of Action in Kilkenny/Carlow Division.
This is the 8th such Day of Action in the Division. Operation Thor is a multi-strand national anti-crime strategy.
The Day of Action is a high visibility policing operation whose main focus is to prevent and detect high volume crimes (burglaries and thefts) committed throughout the Kilkenny/Carlow Division. The operation will focus in particular on intelligence gathering, warrant executions, searches, arrests, crime detection and crime prevention.

The Operation is supported by National and Regional Units including the Regional Support Unit, Regional Surveillance Unit and the Garda Air Support Unit.
