As part of an ongoing investigation into the theft of boat engines, Gardaí in Portlaoise carried out three searches in the town on the 24th and 25th of June.
Resulting from these searches, a large volume of property was recovered, including:
• 74 outboard engines
• 10 boats
• 8 boat trailers
• 1 caravan
• 8 trailers
• 2 generators
After carrying out initial enquiries, Gardaí have managed to locate an owner for one of the engines, however they are now appealing for those who may have had an engine stolen recently to view the items on the Garda Facebook site to see if their engine is amongst the property.
Detective Sergeant John Healy, speaking at Portlaoise Garda station said:
"We are appealing to people all over the country who may have had an outboard engine stolen to look at the photos and see if their engine is amongst the property we have here.
Obviously, as we are in a central location, we feel that the engines could belong to people countrywide, so we’re asking everyone from Killybegs to Castletownbere to look at the photos.
We’ve set up a dedicated email for people to contact us and make an appointment to view if they believe that their property is here with us”.
Portlaoise Gadaí also recovered items such as boat covers, winches and petrol cans that would be used in boatyards. These items are also viewable on the Garda Facebook page.
