The Garda College in Templemore will this week (Wednesday 5th to Friday 7th November 2014) host a European conference on ‘Gender, Diversity and Police Leadership’. The conference is being organised by the European Network of Police Women in partnership with the Association of European Police Colleges.
The seminar will be attended by 50 participants with police representatives from Northern Ireland, Germany, Poland, UK, Spain, Montenegro, Lithuania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Austria, Sweden, and Netherlands, as well as An Garda Síochána.
An Garda Síochána is proud to be hosting the seminar, which is aimed at sharing insights and international perspectives from the both the police and the private sector on ensuring gender and diversity considerations are brought to bear by those in leadership positions. It will allow for an exchange of ideas and will provide a platform for discussion on best practice with a view to informing future policy considerations.
Topics being covered such as ‘Gender balance on the consequences for the work of the police’, ‘Bringing diversity to the leadership table’ and ‘Retaining and progressing women in your organisation’, as well as a keynote address from the President of the European Network of Policewomen, Ms. Montserrat Pina Martinez.
Other speakers include Anneke Oosting, Chief of Police, Director of National Expertise Centre on Diversity, Netherlands; Superintendent May-Britt Rinaldo, County Police Commissioner’s Office in County Västra Götaland, Sweden; Dr Norbert Leitner, Director of the Police Academy Vienna; Paula Neary, Client Director, Accenture; John Barrett, Executive Director, HR and People Development, An Garda Síochána; Assistant Commissioner Organisation Development & Strategic Planning, Jack Nolan, An Garda Síochána, and Chief Superintendent Anne Marie McMahon, Director of Training, An Garda Síochána.
There are 3,309 female members of An Garda Síochána, which is 26% of the service. In 2012, the average percentage of female members in police services in Europe was 19.48%.
