1. OUTLINE OF OPERATION
Operation Surround is designed to provide a co-ordinated high Garda visibility presence targeting particular locations.
This Operation will involve a number of villages being targeted for enforcement simultaneously through Mandatory Alcohol Testing (MAT) by targeting key offences which contribute to Fatal and Serious Injury Traffic collisions.
Each MAT Checkpoint will commence at 00.30hrs and finish at 01.30hrs.
The Divisional Traffic Inspector will coordinate these MAT Checkpoints.
On the direction of Assistant Commissioner John Twomey Dublin Metropolitan Region , on Sunday, 9th February 2014, at 00.30hrs to 01.30hrs, Mandatory Alcohol Testing (MAT) was performed simultaneously in two location.
2. OBJECTIVES
The objective of this operation is for strict enforcement of the legislation pertaining to driving while intoxicated and to provide a high visibility deterrent to possible offenders. This awareness will include transmission via Social media.
The aim of this campaign is the protection of vulnerable road users, reduction in fatal and serious collisions and the education of drivers regarding their responsibilities to same.
The maximum number of drivers entering the Checkpoint will be breath test.
Crumlin Village
MAT 1- Cromwellsfort Road.
MAT 2- St. Agnes Road.
MAT 3- Whitehall Road West.
MAT 4- Kimmage Road West.
Result- 512 vehicles through checkpoint and 302 tested. 300 passed 2 fails and brought to Terenure Garda Station for evidential breath test.
Phibsboro
MAT 1- Phibsboro Road
MAT 2-Phibsboro Road
MAT 3-North Circular Road
MAT 4-Doyles Corner
Results- 764 vehicles through checkpoint 348 tested all passed.
Total-1276 through checkpoints 650 tested 2 arrests for suspicion of Drink driving. Two unaccompanied drivers also detected.
Garda Assistant Commissioner John Twomey added:
"This morning we ran a series of checkpoints in Dublin. This was the second in a series of such operations. I would like to thank motorists for their co - operation during these checkpoints and as the figures show, the vast majority of people tested were compliant with the legislation.
I want to also send a very strong message to all drivers and remind them that members of An Garda Síochána are out all around the country, day and night, targeting drink driving. The message is clear, never ever drink and drive".
