As part of Operation Artery Gardai have conducted a number of MAT (Mandatory Alcohol Testing) checkpoints overnight in the Dublin area.
The emphasis of these checkpoints was to target specific locations for driving under the influence through the use of Mandatory Alcohol Testing.
Separate one hour MAT checkpoints occurred simultaneously between 23.30hrs and 00.30hrs on the 1st of February in various locations in the Howth and Stillorgan areas of Dublin City.
During the operation 1545 vehicles were stopped at the various checkpoints. A total of 560 drivers were breath tested and 5 drivers arrested (4 male & 1 female). There was also 10 general detections for Road Traffic Offences and one vehicle seized.
Assistant Commissioner John Twomey, Garda National Traffic Bureau, added:
Early this morning we ran a series of highly visible checkpoints across the Dublin area targeting specific locations in Stillorgan and on the Howth Peninsula. I would like to thank motorists for their co - operation during these checkpoints and as the figures show, the vast majority of people tested were compliant with the legislation.
I want to also send a very strong message to all drivers and remind them that members of An Garda Síochána are out all around the country, day and night , targeting intoxicated driving. The message is clear, Never ever drink and drive.
The Mandatory Alcohol Checkpoints involved Traffic Units from each Division in Dublin and in excess of 60 Garda personnel were involved. 18 Garda vehicles were utilised during this operation.
