Investigation into discovery body parts Ballyfermot 31st July 2014

The Garda investigation into the discovery of two body parts, an upper and a lower leg found at Thornton’s Recycling facility at Kileen Road, Ballyfermot is continuing.

The lower leg was discovered at about 11pm on Thursday 31st July 2014 and Gardai were notified. The area was sealed off and a second body part (thigh to pelvis) was discovered on Friday 1st August.

These body parts were removed to Tallaght Hospital where a post mortem examination was carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis. DNA analysis has determined that the body parts are male, and both come from the same person. There is no other information known about the race / nationality, age etc. and a cause of death has yet to be determined. The services of a forensic anthropologist have been requested.

The search of Thorntons has been ongoing since Friday and is expected to continue for a number of days. A number of other items, some of which are believed to be human flesh and bones (to be determined by Dr. Curtis) have been recovered in the search. No other identifiable limbs have been found.

The focus of the investigation at this time is to establish the identity of this man, and to determine the cause of death.
