"We are determined to continue working with communities countrywide to ensure that the scourge of drugs is eliminated from the country’s streets. We know that by targeting the sale and supply of drugs, we are targeting the livelihood of criminals, and reducing their ability to carry out illegal activities.

We will continue to disrupt criminals and dismantle their networks, utilising advanced analytical and intelligence methods to facilitate targeted operations, such as seen in Drogheda last weekend. The success of this strategy can be seen here today, with approximately €1 million (pending analysis) worth of drugs before you. Not only that, there are three males remanded in custody after being charged as a result of the operation.

We will continue to ensure all possible legislation available to us is used, that we continue to innovate and develop new strategies to target groups and individuals involved in drug crime, and that we work together with national and international partners to share information gathered for the benefit of all.

In regard to this operation we want to acknowledge the ongoing cooperation and the assistance provided by our colleagues in the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Most importantly, however, we will continue to work for and with local communities and ensure that a proactive, communicative open relationship is maintained.

For be in no doubt, we are committed to tackling the sale and supply of drugs at all levels in keeping with our commitment to the National Drugs Strategy. Garda National Drugs Unit and local Drugs Units work together to ensure a co-ordinated effective approach to protecting our communities.

As well as proactive operations, An Garda Síochána is involved in a variety of activities such as the Garda youth diversionary projects, the Juvenile Diversion Programme, and the Garda School Programme to educate people about the damage and injury caused by drug use.

Families who suffer threats and intimidation from criminal groups involved in the distribution and sale of drugs are advised to contact local Gardaí. Specially trained Inspectors are available in each Division to facilitate a coordinated response to this issue.

By working alongside the various agencies and local community groups, An Garda Síochána will continue to play our part in maintaining a safer community."
