Appeal - Discovery of body in Bailieboro, Cavan and arrest following incident at licensed premises on the 5/9/13

At approximately 6pm on 5th September 2013 a female called to Bailieboro Garda station expressing concern as to the welfare of her sister who she had been unable to contact since early that day.

Gardaí commenced enquiries and went to the Square Bar in Bailieboro. Shortly after entering the bar at approximately 7pm, a male, 56 years, emerged from the basement carrying a firearm. Gardaí were threatened. Gardaí immediately evacuated the bar of patrons and staff, and the immediate area was sealed off.
 

Shortly afterwards, Gardaí went to a house at Drumbannon Bailieboro, Co. Cavan and conducted a forced entry on the house. Gardaí discovered the body of a female, aged 54, with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. The area was immediately sealed off for a full technical examination and the Office of the State Pathologist was notified.
 

The State Pathologist Dr. Cassidy visited the house at Drumbannon Bailieboro this morning and carried out a preliminary examination of the scene. The body of the deceased will be removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda later today, where a full post mortem will be carried out. Gardaí await the results of the post-mortem.
 

The scene at the pub was designated a crisis incident. A crisis management structure was put in place. The assistance of specialist units was sought, including trained negotiators and intervention units. The protection and preservation of life was the fundamental goal of An Garda Síochána during this operation. Over the next number of hours trained negotiators engaged with this male. At approximately 3.20am this morning, the male emerged from the rear of the public house. No shots were fired. He was arrested under Section 50 Criminal Justice Act 2007.
 

He was conveyed to Bailieboro Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 50 Criminal Justice Act 2007. A firearm was recovered at the scene and is subject to a full ballistic examination. The scene at the public house is currently the subject of a full technical examination.
 

A Garda family liaison officer has been appointed and is in contact with the family of the deceased.
 

Gardaí based at Bailieboro have launched a full investigation into this incident and are appealing to any person who may have seen any unusual or suspicious activity at Drumbannon Bailieboro between 9am and 7pm on the 5th September to contact them.

 
They are also appealing for anyone patrons who may have been in The Square Bar, Bailieboro between 4pm and 7pm on the same date and who also may have seen any unusual or suspicious activity to come forward.

Gardai are investigating the discovery of the body of a 56 year old woman at a house in Drumbannon, Bailieboro, Co. Cavan yesterday evening

The scene is currently preserved and the services of the State Pathologist and Garda Technical Bureau have been requested. 
 

A 56 year old male was arrested at approximately 3am this morning at a Licensed Premises in Bailieboro in connection with the death. He is currently in custody at Bailieboro Garda Station under the provisions of Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007. The scene at the licensed premises is also preserved for a technical examination. 
 

Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses that may have been in the Drumbannon housing estate yesterday and may have seen anything unusual or suspicious or to anyone who can assist with this investigation to contact the incident room at Bailieboro Garda Station 042-9694570, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
