At 9.30pm last night (Friday 25th January 2013) Two members of An Garda Síochána from the detective branch in Dundalk were on a cash escort duty at the Lordship Credit Union, Belurgan, Jenkinstown, Dundalk, Co Louth which is on the main Omeath, Carlingford, Dundalk Road the R173.
A number of armed raiders approached Detective Garda Donohoe, a shot was discharged by one of the raiders fatally injuring D/Garda Donohoe. The armed raiders fled the scene in a dark coloured saloon car travelling in the direction of Dundalk. No other person was injured during the incident.
The scene was immediately sealed off. The office of the State Pathologist was notified. The deputy State Pathologist Dr. Khalid Jabbar attended the scene and carried out a preliminary examination. The body of Detective Garda Adrian Donohue was removed from the scene to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where a full Post Mortem examination will take place later today.(26/1/13)
A Garda liaison member has fully briefed the family of Garda Donohoe.
Investigating Gardaí are appealing for information in relation to this incident to contact them. They are particularly anxious to speak to anyone who was in the area (Belurgan, Jenkinstown, Dundalk) between 6pm and 9.30pm last night (25/1/13) .
Gardaí are also appealing for information from any person who may have seen the dark coloured car driving towards Dundalk or possibly onto the M1 after the incident.
