The Casualty Reduction Strategy was launched on the 1st October 2012 for an eight week period.
Its aim is to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured in the Dublin area as an educational initiative.
In particular a limited supply of highly visible LED bicycle lights, which have been provided by the National Transport Authority, were distributed to cyclists who require them for their bicycles and who wish to improve their road safety whilst being compliant with Road Traffic laws.
The four Dublin Local Authorities, our partner stakeholders in the Casualty Reduction Strategy have also been issued with a limited supply of these bicycle lights. They will also be distributing them in various ways throughout this campaign, i.e. in schools, by school wardens, to 3rd level institutions and through competitions such as on Traffic FM.
These items however are limited, and will be issued on a need basis by operational members on routine patrol.
An Garda Síochána will be distributing an assortment of high visibility merchandise to vulnerable roads users between 1pm and 2pm on Saturday the 1st December at the following locations:
Dublin Metropolitan Region: Dame Street beside the Central Bank.
South East Region: John Roberts Square (also know as Red Square) Waterford City
Western Region Spanish: Arch Galway City
Northern Region: Ash Lane, Sligo
Eastern Region: Navan Shopping Centre, Navan
Southern Region: Winthrop Street, (Brown Thomas), Cork City.
Speaking at Garda Headquarters Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid of the Garda National Traffic Bureau said: "There are two aspects as to why we are carrying out this initiative,
Firstly the simple fact is that they enable you to see and be seen and this saves lives, plus there is a legal requirement for lights on the front and back of your bicycle at night.”
Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid continued: - "We must thank both the National Transport Authority and the Road Safety Authority for providing this high visibility merchandise which we are distributing to our vulnerable road users to assist us with our overall strategy of reducing fatalities and serious injuries on our roads”.
"Be Safe Be Seen” is more than just a catch phrase; it is saving lives on our roads”
