Investigation into the death of Gerard Delaney on the 27/12/11 - Update

The 2 men arrested by Gardaí investigating the death of Gerard Delaney were released from custody in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday 7th February 2012.

A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and forwarded on completion.

Gardaí in Togher investigating the death of Gerard Delaney on 27/12/11 have arrested two men (late teens and early twenties) this morning 6/2/12. They were arrested in the Togher area and are currently detained at Togher Garda Station under Section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Gardaí at Togher in Cork are investigating a fatal assault that occurred in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday 27th December 2011.

A row broke out in a public house on Lower Friars Walk, Ballyphehane, sometime after mid-night and it continued to the street outside.  As a result of the row a 51 year old man received serious injuries and was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Two men were arrested for public order offences and have subsequently been released from custody without charge pending further investigation.

An 18 year old male and a female in her 20’s were taken to Mercy University Hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening.

The post mortem has concluded and it has been established that death was as a result of a combination of head trauma and stab wounds.  

The deceased has been named as 51 year old Gerard Delaney of Mahon, Co. Cork.  

Investigations continue and no arrests have been made.
