Last Thursday (24 March 2011) the Garda Commissioner Mr Martin Callinan stated that he had appointed Detective Chief Superintendent Eugene Corcoran from the Criminal Assets Bureau to examine issues arising from the report of the Moriarty Tribunal with a view to establishing whether or not any criminal offences meriting investigation are disclosed.
He further stated that Detective Chief Superintendent Eugene Corcoran would liaise as necessary with the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation and that until this examination is complete, it is premature to call that process a Garda investigation. <_o3a_p>
The situation has not changed in the intervening period. Gardaí continue to study and assess the report of the Tribunal with a view to establishing whether there are any matters therein which may require criminal investigation.<_o3a_p>
The Garda Commissioner made his remarks in response to media questions following a meeting at Parliament Buildings, Belfast between the two police chiefs and Justice Ministers North and South.
