Gardaí have this morning, 31st May 2010,  arrested four men in Co. Laois for suspected offences under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act 2001 as part of a major investigation into the counterfeiting of money.

The operation, which was led by the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation and supported by the Emergency Response Unit, other national support units and local Gardaí from Abbeyleix, was initiated following an analysis of increased activity in counterfeiting across Europe. This morning's arrests are the culmination of an extensive operation which has been ongoing for a number of months and which has involved information sharing across a number of international law enforcement agencies including Europol.

The four men aged in their 40's and 50's are detained at Portlaoise 057 8674100 and Tullamore Garda Stations under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A site including a number of buildings near Borris-in-Ossory has been sealed off for a detailed technical examination by a forensic investigation team from the Garda Technical Bureau.
