Following an ongoing operation involving Gardaí in Galway assisted by members of the RSU (Regional Support Unit) a search and arrest operation was carried out yesterday, Wednesday, 26th January 2011.
Gardaí searched lands at Monivea, Co. Galway and recovered a quantity of explosive material in an out-building. A further search was carried out in a farmhouse at the same location during which four (4) firearms were recovered - one handgun and three shotguns. A 48 year old man was arrested at the scene under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act 1939 and is detained at Galway Garda Station.
The Army’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit attended at the scene and removed the explosive material.
In a follow-up operation Gardaí searched a house in Tuam, Galway. One firearm was recovered and two people arrested under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act 1939. (Male and female both 40yrs). They are currently detained at Galway Garda Station.
The explosives and firearms have been removed to Garda Headquarters for forensic examination.
