Gardai in Cork investigating the activities of dissident republicans and the murder of Gerard Staunton (on the 20th of January 2010), have carried out a search and arrest operation this morning, the 19th January 2011.
The arrests were made as part of intelligence led operation following a number of searches carried out in the Cork City and County area.
A total of 5 males, (1 aged in his 20's, 2 in their 30's, 1 aged in his 40's, and 1 in his 50's) and one female (aged in her 20's) were arrested during the operation.
They are detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939, at Mayfield, Togher, Bridewell and Gurranabraher Garda Stations.

Speaking at today’s press conference in Togher Garda Station, Superintendent Charlie Barry renewed his appeal for information in relation to the murder of Gerard Staunton (41 years) yesterday 20/1/10. Superintendent Barry called the murder callous and brutal, and appealed to the public for their help on a number of specific points:
- The van used in the murder was a 92 C red Toyota Red Toyota Liteace (fitted with "bull bars"), which was driven by the attacker from the scene of the murder at Westlawn, Sarsfield Road in the Wilton area of Cork to the Castlewhite/Waterfall area, where it was subsequently found burnt out a short time later.
- The assailant was approximately 6" in height, wearing dark clothing and a balaclava.
Gardaí in Togher are appealing for anyone who may have seen this Toyota Hiace earlier in the day, or in the area itself at the time of the murder to come forward. They are also looking for anyone with any information to contact them, either at Togher Garda station (021 494 7120) the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Gardai in Togher in Cork have launched an investigation into the shooting of a man in his 40’s this evening – 20th January 2010.
The incident occurred in Westlawn, Wilton in Togher at approximately 8.15pm.
The man was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
