Galway arrests - dissident activity

As part of the ongoing operation into dissident republican activity Gardai in Galway assisted by the Western Regional Support Unit arrested a male(48 yrs) on the 26th Jan and a male (40yrs) and a female (40's) on the 27th Jan 2011.

They were detained at Galway Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against The State Act 1939  as amended.

The female was later released on the 27th January 2011 without charge.

The 2 males arrested on the 26th/27th will appear before a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court, Courts of Criminal Justice, Parkgate St, Dublin at 1.30pm today, the 30th January 2011.

Following an ongoing operation involving Gardaí in Galway assisted by members of the RSU (Regional Support Unit) a search and arrest operation was carried out yesterday, Wednesday, the 26th January  2011.

Gardaí searched lands at Monivea, Galway and recovered a quantity of explosive material in an out-building. A further search was carried out in a farmhouse at the same location during which four (4) firearms were recovered - one handgun and three shotguns. A 48 year old man was arrested at the scene under Section 30 Offences Against The State Act 1939 and is detained at Galway Garda Station.

The Army’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit attended at the scene and removed the explosive material.

In a follow-up operation Gardaí searched a house in Tuam, Co Galway. One firearm was recovered and two people arrested under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act 1939. (Male and female - both 40yrs) They are currently detained at Galway Garda Station.

The explosives and firearms have been removed to Garda Headquarters for forensic examination.

Investigations are continuing.
