Gardaí at Birr are investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the road between Cloghan and Shannonbridge at approximately 1pm on the 18.12.11.
A 30 year old female who was a passenger in a car was seriously injured when the car she was travelling in left the road and entered the canal at Clononey. She was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe but was pronounced dead this evening. The other occupants, a male driver and an 8 month old boy, were also taken to Hospital in Ballinasloe with minor injuries.
This stretch of road was closed for an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators but has now reopened following its completion.
