Gardai in Longford are investigating the circumstances of an assault which occurred on 31/12/09, following which a man aged in his 50's has died.
At approximately 21.45pm an incident occurred at Park Road, Longford Town, during which a man was assaulted while out walking. He was treated at the scene for his injuries but was pronounced dead a short time later.
His body has been removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar, where the Deputy State Pathologist will conduct a Post Mortem examination later today.
The scene remains preserved pending a technical examination.
A man and a woman both aged in their 20,s were arrested. They are currently detained at Longford Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
