Commissioner Announces Investigation

The Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has appointed a Chief Superintendent to examine and inquire into all the circumstances surrounding the recent public disclosure of correspondence addressed to An Garda Síochána at Balbriggan Garda Station.

The Commissioner has also tasked the Chief Superintendent to inquire into a complaint made by a member of the public at the Bridewell Garda Station on 18 February 2010 and other related matters arising from a separate case in Limerick.

The Garda Commissioner is mindful that some of the matters being examined and inquired into by the Chief Superintendent have arisen in the context of proceedings which are still before the court and in those circumstances will be making no further comment at this time.

Note to Editors:

The Garda Commissioner has appointed Chief Superintendent Michael Finn, Cork Division to carry out the necessary inquiries. Any matter arising from the inquiries requiring consideration by the Director of Public Prosecutions will be forwarded to his office for direction. It is the intention of the Garda Commissioner to forward a copy of the final report to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. The Commissioner has also confirmed that a copy of the final report will be forwarded to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.
