European Mobility Week which is running from 16th to the 22nd September 2009

People are being encouraged to walk, cycle and avail of public transport.

An Garda Siochana is supporting European Mobility Week which is running from September 16th to September 22nd 2009. This week is culmination with in the “In Town Without My Car” day.

People are being encouraged to walk, cycle and avail of public transport, particularly on this day.

An Garda Siochana are urging people to be safe, whatever method they chose, in supporting European Mobility Week.

The Gardai will be on duty on all arterial routes to support public transport.

Pedestrians are reminded to be cautious and to be aware of any potential hazards they may face. As a pedestrian you are advised to follow the saying “Don’t be hasty, get across safely”.

Cyclists in particular are being reminded about the potential dangers being faced by them on the roads. Many people are now returning to cycling after a period of absence. The old adage does apply “Once you’ve learnt how to ride a bike, you’ll never forget”. What you may loose or forget is cycle sense. That is the skill and experience you develop over years of cycling on roads. Our towns have gotten busier and busier over the past few years. The question the cyclist has to ask themselves is “do I have the necessary skills to, safely, negotiate around town”. There is a huge difference between cycling in the suburbs and cycling in a town.

We would urge these cyclists returning to cycling to exercise great caution while they get used to cycling on busy streets.

An Garda Siochana offers the following simple reminders to cyclists. These will assist them in having a safe, enjoyable experience on “In Town Without My Car” day and beyond.

Make sure that your bike is road worthy.

Ø     Check tyres, lights, brakes, reflectors & bell are in working order.

Ø     Make sure that the bike FITS you.

Familiarise yourself with the route(s) that you intend to take. This will help identify any hazards you may face.

Make yourself as visible as possible. Make sure that all other road users are able to see you.

Ø     Wear Hi-Visibility vest, Sam Brown belt.

Ø     Use lights.

We recommend that you wear a properly fitted cycle helmet.

Use dedicated cycle tracks where available.

Give good, clear, early signals to other road users. Try to make eye contact with drivers to ensure that they have seen you.

Do not listen to music on headphones.

Obey the Rules of the Road.
