Commenting on the publication by the Central Statistics Office of crime statistics for the third quarter of 2009, the Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy said that the marked increase in burglaries in particular requires a renewed focus of investigative resources on this crime as well as increased emphasis on prevention.
The Commissioner said:
“I am conscious that burglary is a crime that can impact significantly on individuals and their sense of security. I want to assure the community that my people continue to target those who are committing burglaries with intelligence-led, focused operations. These activities have yielded results and people are charged before the courts. Nonetheless, this work must and will continue.”
Referring to the need for partnership in tackling crime, particularly opportunistic crimes such as burglary, the Commissioner said:
“In the last week I met with my senior management team and Chief Superintendents from all around the country and we discussed the latest crime trends as well as sharing learning and strategies to prevent and detect crime.
As well as renewing our efforts, I want to stress again the small steps which people can take to protect their homes and property. A few minutes spent locking doors and windows before you leave the house, using an alarm system or ensuring that valuable items are secured will deter many burglars.
I would also ask for the community’s help in our investigation of crimes in their neighbourhoods. Keeping a look out for activity in your area and providing us with information can be of great benefit to us in our work.”
