An Garda Síochána wishes to clarify the position regarding Garda office accommodation in Tallaght following the Commissioner’s attendance at yesterday’s meeting of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women’s Rights.
Contrary to media reports An Garda Síochána is not currently renting nor has it previously rented hotel rooms in the Plaza Hotel in Tallaght.
As an interim measure, the Office of Public Works (OPW) was requested to provide additional accommodation in Tallaght for Garda use. Following this request, the OPW identified office accommodation which it had already leased in the Plaza Office Complex in Tallaght and which is now vacant. The area consists of 990 sq metres.
On 20 January 2009, An Garda Síochána requested the OPW to progress the procurement of the fit out of the Plaza Office Complex as a matter of urgency. It is expected that Gardaí based in Tallaght will be in a position to take up occupation in the Plaza Office Complex during 2009, thereby relieving some of the current accommodation pressures in the existing Garda station.
The position has been clarified by way of a letter to the Clerk of the Committee.
