Garda Road Safety Campaign - May Bank Holiday 2009
Tragically 76 people have died on our roads so far this year. Over the May Bank Holiday period in 2008, three people died in road traffic collisions. All road users are urged to be attentive and so enhance their own safety and that of other road users.
Over the coming weekend Garda resources will be deployed with the aim of increasing compliance amongst road users and improving road safety.
Particular focus will be placed on vulnerable road users i.e. pedestrians, cyclists and motor cyclists.
With the advent of longer evenings, greater use will be made of the road network. We would appeal to road users to pay particular attention to their own road safety and to wear high visibility clothing.
· 12 pedestrians.
· 8 motorcyclists.
· 2 pedal cyclists have lost their lives on our road so far this year.
We would appeal to drivers to drive within the speed limits and appropriate to the road conditions. We would also appeal to drivers to drive with dipped headlights during daylight hours, to make sure fog lights are not inadvertently switched on when not required.
· Figures are correct as of the 27th April, 2009.
As of the 4th May, 2009 Garda Síochána is introducing centralised processing for the issuing of specialised vehicle permits for the movement of abnormal loads on certain designated roads throughout the country. Permits will now be issued by the Permits Officer at the Garda National Traffic Bureau. The movement of abnormal loads on all other roads remains unchanged. Details of the new procedures will be posted on the Garda web site on the 4th May 2009.
