The week will be marked by a series of high profile events nationally as well as increased activity by local community gardaí and crime prevention officers in schools and communities. In announcing the week of community safety activities the Garda Commissioner, Fachtna Murphy said: "An Garda Síochána is committed to working in partnership with communities to ensure that people can enjoy a good quality of life in safe surroundings. This is a 24/7 commitment on our part - 365 days of the year. This week we are highlighting the simple steps everyone can take to protect themselves, their families and their property and we are emphasising the role each individual can play in securing a safer community for everyone." An Garda Síochána would encourage people who are looking for crime prevention advice to contact their local crime prevention officer and community gardaí. Events during Garda Community Safety Week will include: A ‘Community Safety’ awareness slot on the Crimecall television programme to be broadcast on RTE 1 on Tuesday 23rd September.
A Garda ‘Information Point’ Stand at The National Ploughing Championships at Grange, Co Kilkenny from 23rd – 25th September. (Located at Arcade 619) Official opening by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Dermot Ahern TD, of the Fixed Charged Processing Office in Thurles, Co. Tipperary and the launch of eight new Garda Mobile Speed Detection Vehicles on the morning of Monday, 22 September. Circulation of new Crime Prevention and Community Safety Advice leaflets to the public in several forums, including public libraries and on the Garda website.
The new Garda Mobile Incident Command Unit will be in locations throughout the Dublin Metropolitan Region during the week where gardaí will be distributing the new crime prevention leaflets and talking to members of the public. The hosting of the inaugural national AGM of Neighbourhood Watch in Athlone on Saturday 27th September. Community Alert meetings will be held nationwide during the week and community gardaí will visit primary schools to discuss basic road safety and crime prevention steps. This initiative is being co-ordinated by Garda Community Relations Division, Harcourt Square, Dublin 2.
