Garda Community Safety Week.

Events are continuing throughout this week as part of Garda Community Safety Week which will run until 28 September 2008.

Events are continuing throughout this week as part of Garda Community Safety Week which will run until 28 September 2008. These include a number of high profile national events as well as increased activity by local community gardaí and crime prevention officers in schools and communities. 

Today, a Garda ‘Information Point’ Stand (located at Arcade 619) opens at the National Ploughing Championships in Co. Kilkenny. A crime prevention officer will be available as well as gardaí from the Dog Unit, the Road Safety Unit and the Garda Reserve Office.

New crime prevention leaflets will be distributed and these are also available on the Garda website. 

The Crimecall television programme tonight will feature a crime prevention slot as well as focusing on some recent crimes on which Gardaí are seeking the public’s assistance including: 

-          the murder of Paul Martin in Finglas on 23 August 2008; 

-          the murder of Trevor Walsh in Finglas on 19 July 2008; 

-          a sexual assault in Swords on Sunday, 3 July 2008; and 

-          attacks on women in Athlone. 

The Garda Mobile Incident Command Unit is at The Square in Tallaght today and will be in other locations throughout Dublin for the remainder of the week: 

-          Wednesday, 24 September – OMNI Centre, The Pavillion Centre, Sutton Cross and Balbriggan 

-          Thursday, 25 September – Junction of Trinity College and Grafton Street 

-          Friday, 26 September – Clearwater Shopping Centre (a.m.) and Liffey Valley (p.m.) 

-          Saturday, 27 September – Central media opposite the GPO, O’Connell Street. 

When announcing the week of community safety activities the Garda Commissioner, Fachtna Murphy said:  "An Garda Síochána is committed to working in partnership with communities to ensure that people can enjoy a good quality of life in safe surroundings. This is a 24/7 commitment on our part - 365 days of the year. This week we are highlighting the simple steps everyone can take to protect themselves, their families and their property and we are emphasising the role each individual can play in securing a safer community for everyone."
