Garda investigation into the disappearance / death of Brian McGrath, Granard, 1987.

Brian McGrath was last seen in March, 1987. As part of the investigation significant information came to light in 1993, raising serious concerns regarding Mr. McGrath.

 

In relation to the above investigation (Previous release 636/08 refers) Superintendent Kevin Donohoe will hold a Press Briefing at 12.30pm outside the house at the scene at Coole, Co.Westmeath.

As part of the operations of the Garda Serious Crime Review Team, Gardai in Longford/Westmeath Division this morning undertook a number of activities in furtherance of the investigation into the disappearance / death of Brian McGrath in 1987. 

At approximately 6a.m. on the 19th May, Gardai exhumed remains at Whitehall Cemetery, Coole, Co. Westmeath.  

The remains were removed to Dublin City Morgue, Marino for additional post mortem examination and further tests.  These examinations are currently ongoing. 

Later in the morning, Gardai commenced a Crime Scene Investigation at a private house at Coole, Co. Westmeath – the family home of Mr. McGrath.   This aspect of the investigation is currently ongoing. 

Brian McGrath was last seen in March, 1987.  As part of the investigation significant information came to light in 1993, raising serious concerns regarding Mr. McGrath.  

A comprehensive investigation was undertaken at the time and following the discovery of what was believed to be the remains of Mr. McGrath, a file was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecution. 

No prosecution was taken against any party.  The Gardai in the Longford/Westmeath Division, headed by Chief Superintendent Willie Ryan, the Garda Serious Crime Review Team, headed by Detective Superintendent Christy Mangan, examined this case.  Using new technologies and investigative techniques, including DNA, which were not available to the original investigation team, it is felt that the investigation can now be progressed. 

This investigation now involves upwards of twenty five Garda personnel, assisted by a Crime Scene Investigation team from the Garda Technical Bureau; the Forensic Science Laboratory; an external soil surveying company and an anthropologist.

The office of the State Pathologist is aware of this latest phase of the investigation.
