Incidents of criminality & public disorder, Waterford.
An Garda Siochana have, in recent weeks, undertaken a number of operations and activities regarding feuding factions in the Waterford area, primarily within the travelling community.
Significant resources have been directed at criminal activity and public disorder which has occurred in the Waterford area in recent weeks.
Garda operations are directed at disrupting this activity and ensuring a safe and secure community for everyone in the Waterford area.
An Garda Siochana would like to acknowledge the great support, cooperation and assistance which we have received from the communities in Waterford, both settled and travelling.
Resources from the Waterford District, augmented by additional resources from the division and region, continue to be deployed in an overt high visibility operation including random static vehicle checkpoints and extensive mobile patrols, both by uniformed and armed personnel.
Coupled with the approach, an intelligence-led investigative operation is also being conducted and as part of this, approximately 10 searches have been conducted in the last week of various types of premises and open (waste) ground.
These searches resulted in the seizure of a number of items, including - two sawn off shotguns; thirty seven petrol bombs; small quantity of ammunition; an assortment of weapons including – slash hooks, machetes, hammers, pick axe handles, swords, knives and hatchets.
Fourteen persons have been arrested to date within this operation, of which nine have been charged with a variety of offences and have appeared before the Courts.
Briefly, these include:-
On the 12th July, a 22 year old man was arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 34 Criminal Justice Act - Released without charge.
On the 13th July, a 25 year old man was arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act - Released without charge.
On the 14th July, two men, aged 27 and 29 years, were arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act and Section 30 Offences Against the State Act, respectively - Both were released without charge.
On the 14th July, two men, aged 23 and 27 years, were arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act - Both have been charged and appeared at Waterford District Court on the 16th July and 15th July, respectively. Both are remanded in custody to appear there again on the 22nd July.
On the 15th July, a 22 year old man was arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act - He was charged and appeared before Waterford District Court on the 16th July. He is remanded in custody to appear there again on the 22nd July.
On the 15th July, a 38 year old man was arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act - He was charged and appeared before Waterford District Court on the 16th July. He is remanded in custody to appear there again on the 22nd July.
On the 16th July, a 59 year old man was arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act - He was charged and appeared before Waterford District Court on the 18th July. He is remanded in custody to appear there again on the 22nd July.
On the 16th July, a 22 year old man was arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act - He was charged and appeared before Waterford District Court on the 18th July. He is remanded in custody to appear there again on the 24th July.
On the 16th July, a 33 year old man was arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act - He was charged and appeared before Waterford District Court on the 17th July. He is remanded on bail to appear there again on the 22nd July.
On the 18th July three men, aged 28, 31 and 52 years, were arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act - The 31 year old was charged and appeared before a special sitting of Waterford District Court on the 21st July. He is remanded in custody to appear there again on the 24th July. The other two men were released without charge.
