As part of an international investigation into the activities of a Lithuanian drugs trafficking gang, a joint operation was carried out by the Garda National Drugs Unit.
Following forensic analysis of the substance seized during the joint Garda National Drugs Unit and Customs operation in Birr, Co. Offaly, it has now been confirmed that the substance is methamphetamine and not cocaine as originally suspected.
At six kilos, this is the largest seizure of methamphetamine to date in this jurisdiction.

As part of an international investigation into the activities of a Lithuanian drugs trafficking gang, a joint operation was carried out on 21st July, 2008 by the Garda National Drugs Unit and Revenue’s Customs Service in which a 32 year old male was arrested at Birr, Co.Offaly.
Cocaine and Herbal Cannabis with a potential street value of €500,000 was seized.
The man is currently being detained at Tullamore Garda Station under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
Follow up searches were carried out in Cork, Kerry and Meath.
