SENT ON BEHALF OF THE PSNI
SOME TIME DURING TUESDAY NIGHT / WEDNESDAY MORNING (10TH DECEMBER 2008) AN IFOR WILLIAMS TRAILER WAS TAKEN FROM TANDGRAGEE ROAD , JERRETSPASS , NEWRY , CONTAINING HYPO CHLORITE ACID. THERE WAS BETWEEN 1500 AND 2000 LITRES IN THIS TRAILOR. CHEMICAL IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS.
TRAILER WHICH IS 8' X 4'6" WITH A TANK AND ROLLER DOORS , CONTAINS AN EXTREMELY POWERFUL BLEACH OR ALKALAE. THIS IS EXTREMELY CORROSIVE. IF THE TRAILER WERE FOUND OR THE SUBSTANCE DUMPED THIS WOULD HAVE TO BE TREATED AS A VERY SERIOUS 'HAZCHEM' INCIDENT. ADVICE FROM A SENIOR FIRE OFFICER IS THAT THE SUBSTANCE OR CONTAINER SHOULD NOT BE APPROACHED. IT IS ADVISED THAT ONE SHOULD NOT STAND DOWN WIND ETC..AND TAKE FULL PROTECTIVE MEASURES , HAZCHEM SUITS ETC.
NO BETTER DESC OF CONTAINER OR TRAILER.
FURTHER ENQUIRIES SHOULD BE MADE TO THE PSNI PRESS OFFICE.
