GNDOCB was established on the 9th March 2015, and comes under the executive control of Assistant Commissioner, Organised & Serious Crime following the amalgamation of the Garda National Drugs Unit and the Organised Crime Unit (GNDOCB).
GNDOCB role is to proactively, via intelligence led investigations, disrupt, dismantle and prosecute those persons engaged in top tier organised crime groups, primarily involved in murder, drug/firearms trafficking, armed robberies and associated money laundering.
In addition as a lead agency in the implementation of the National Drugs Strategy, Reducing Harm, Supporting Recovery, a health-led response to drug and alcohol use in Ireland 2017 – 2025 GNDOCB has responsibility for the implementation of initiatives and policies which contribute to Government strategies to reduce the demand for drugs and also diminish the harm associated with substance misuse
