Background:
Timothy O’Sullivan, born on 27th November, 1896, came from 98 Street, Skibbereen, Co. Cork. He joined An Garda Síochána on 20th March, 1925. He served in the Volunteers (1917/1922), holding the rank of Captain of ‘A’ Company, 4th Battalion, 3rd Cork Brigade. In 1921 he took part in the Rosscarbary battle and for a time acted as Magistrate in the Parish Court in his home town and in addition acted as supervisor to the West Cork Board of Health. He relinquished both of these positions in 1922 and entered the National Army with the rank of Captain. Garda O’ Sullivan, a single man, also served at Tralee and Kilgarvan.

Circumstances:

On 11th June, 1929, a note was delivered to Knock Garda Station, Co. Clare addressed to Detective Garda O’Sullivan setting out that a box of ammunition and papers had been found in a field at nearby Tullycrine.  Detective Garda O’Sullivan cycled to the area and in the corner of a field found the box described in the note. From the contents of the note received Detective Garda O’Sullivan was of the view that the box could be opened with safety. He went up to it and pulled at the hasp whereupon there was an explosion. Detective Garda O’Sullivan received very serious injuries, from which he died.
