Background:Arthur Nolan was born on the 9th January, 1885. He joined the Volunteers in 1914 and was a member of the Old IRA, Dublin Brigade, “E” Company, 4th Battalion. In August, 1922 he was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Department based in Oriel House, Dublin. This was a plain clothed counter-insurgency police unit that operated during the Irish Civil War. Many of its personnel were former IRA fighters. In 1923 the CID was disbanded. Mr. Nolan was transferred to the Dublin Metropolitan Police as a detective. In 1925 the DMP was amalgamated with An Garda Siochana. He was married with eight children at the time of his death.

Circumstances:

Detective Garda Arthur Nolan was on duty in Brunswick Garda Station on 29th February, 1924. At 9.30 p.m. Mr. George Lane, Waterford, entered the Station and, using a hatchet, hit Detective Garda Nolan over the head. He then wounded two other members in the Station. Detective Garda Nolan was taken to Jervis Street Hospital where he died on 11th March, 1924 from his injuries.
